big hug for you, so many of us have been in your shoes and it is never ever easy. So sorry for you to go through this. Feel free to
share memories if you need to for the healing process. And if you want to be silent I understand that too. But I will cry with you.

Bear was my friend, my protector, and my great love. He loved all people, all other dogs, and even all cats. The cats adored him, and used to rub up against his legs all the time. I even saw one stand on her back legs and give him a hug with her front paws.

Thank you so much for all of the support. It really has helped!

His adoption story:

My daughter, then 10, and I were walking through the shelter in San Diego, and I spotted a 13 year old German Shepard, who was so sad she would not even lift her head up. Her owner had died, and she had lost home, owner, everything. I saw her and said, "Oh, no way are you staying here. Whatever time you have left, you will spend at my house." I told my daughter, just in case the GS was a cat eater (in which case, I was going to call my cat-less sister to come take her, which she would have done in a heartbeat.), to pick out one more dog to see. From the next row over, she chose a 10 year old black dog, who looked lost and scared. We took up both tags.

The lady at the front said, "It's so weird you would choose these two, they came in together 3 weeks ago. Their owner died, and the niece dumped them here right after the funeral." I asked if we could see them together, and they said yes. When they saw each other, it was the first time they had in 3 weeks. I cannot even describe the joy in the reunion for these two, who were leaping around like puppies in glee. Of course, I took both!

Jill, the GS, lived to be 17. Bear was the 10 year old black dog, who I just lost at age 16. But through 2 moves, one cross country move, and a layoff that pretty much cost me everything, I kept my promise - they stayed with us, and had good lives, until the day they died.

Off to cry some more now. Thanks for listening.

Dee

I am so sorry for your loss! It is a very difficult but necessary decision. When they quit eating/drinking, they are saying "I am done". You did the right thing. ((((hugs))))))

Way more big hugs. I love the adoption story and love how much you care and hate how much it hurts, but if it didn't hurt you wouldn't have cared and loved as much either.

I have been there many times and know how you feel, but it does get better in time. Just remember all the good times you had together. ((hugs))

I am so sorry you had to go through this, but we must when we bring them into our lives. They give us so much love and enrich our lives so much. You did a wonderful thing to give your two dogs a second chance at a good life. God bless you for taking them in. God bless them for giving you an unconditional love we most likely cannot find anywhere else. Reading about your sorrow makes me cry with you. I've had to do the same so many times over the years, but it never gets any easier. Take comfort in knowing you did the right thing when you adopted those two wonderful dogs, gave them a loving home, received their unconditional love, and made the right, very difficult decision at the right time. Take time to mourn your very best friend with the knowledge he is no longer in pain. (((((HUGS)))))

I finally got the picture to work, now I just have to figure out how to make it smaller. This is Bear and Jill, at Dog Beach, with my daughter, 3 weeks after we rescued them.

It was hard, grocery shopping today and remembering not to buy dog food. :(

What a beautiful, heart-touching story about how you gave them a life together to the end. Letting them go is heart-wrenching but acknowledge what you gave both of them: a home - together, a family & love. What a marvelous gift you gave & received.
Hugs headed your way... as the others have said, the pain will ease in time & treasured memories will take its place.
Take care,

Oh Dee I am so truly sorry about Bear. Please don't feel you failed him. You were with him at the end and that's what matters most to our furbabies. Bless you. {{{{HUGS}}}}
