Bear was my friend, my protector, and my great love. He loved all people, all other dogs, and even all cats. The cats adored him, and used to rub up against his legs all the time. I even saw one stand on her back legs and give him a hug with her front paws.
Thank you so much for all of the support. It really has helped!
His adoption story:
My daughter, then 10, and I were walking through the shelter in San Diego, and I spotted a 13 year old German Shepard, who was so sad she would not even lift her head up. Her owner had died, and she had lost home, owner, everything. I saw her and said, "Oh, no way are you staying here. Whatever time you have left, you will spend at my house." I told my daughter, just in case the GS was a cat eater (in which case, I was going to call my cat-less sister to come take her, which she would have done in a heartbeat.), to pick out one more dog to see. From the next row over, she chose a 10 year old black dog, who looked lost and scared. We took up both tags.
The lady at the front said, "It's so weird you would choose these two, they came in together 3 weeks ago. Their owner died, and the niece dumped them here right after the funeral." I asked if we could see them together, and they said yes. When they saw each other, it was the first time they had in 3 weeks. I cannot even describe the joy in the reunion for these two, who were leaping around like puppies in glee. Of course, I took both!
Jill, the GS, lived to be 17. Bear was the 10 year old black dog, who I just lost at age 16. But through 2 moves, one cross country move, and a layoff that pretty much cost me everything, I kept my promise - they stayed with us, and had good lives, until the day they died.
Off to cry some more now. Thanks for listening.
Dee
