Mitch...Wish I would have seen this thread much sooner. This whole healthcare thing has been quite the nightmare for me! I am still in my 50's, so don't have SS. I know many RVers with no health ins, but I was always advised to not leave a gap in coverage. I have been, basically, insurance poor as a full time RVer. When I got divorced and started workamping for a living, I lowered my plan to the BCBS Blue Basics plan, to save money on premiums. My domicile is in SD, so looked into ACA there. The plans won't cover me nationwide. So much for being an RV friendly state They also raised vehicle registration fees last June. My DB offered to let me use his address in TN, so I looked into ACA there. OMG! I was so excited that I applied, only to have my brother say he hadn't heard back from his attorney on any problems letting me use his address. WHAT THE HECK???? Needless to say, I had to scurry, as the deadline approaches. Didn't want to have any more issues with my DB over this. My DM, in IA, had already said I could use her address. My previous ACA research had kept saying I qualify for Medicaid and wouldn't let me buy a plan. The good thing is that I could cancel my application in TN. The bad thing is that when you want to back up, while you're applying, you have to start all over. I did this many times, trying to get around the Medicaid thing. Even my ins broker couldn't figure out how to do it. I even called the help line and the gal there finally told me that I could file an appeal on the Medicaid decision. REALLY??? I am on unemployment, now, and my income for this year is only an estimate, so I finally estimated higher and BINGO!!! I got it narrowed down to 2 plans that have nationwide coverage. Had a hard time deciding, but finally did. I called my BCBS and they said I could pay for the one month I have left before my ACA begins. I just had to write them a letter, asking them to cancel my plan, effective May 1, and enclose a check for the one month.
The only health question they ask, on the healthcare.gov website, is if you smoke or have smoked in the past 4 months, or something like that. No other health history.
It's not a done deal, Mitch, until you pay your first month. That is why I could cancel my application in TN. You can also plug in info, without applying, just to see what you would qualify for and the plans offered. The reason I really wanted to go with TN is because they offer BCBS, which is nationwide....and cheap!!! With my low income, my premiums would have been $12 something a month That was a Silver plan, too! My vehicle registrations would only be, what, $70.50 each? Can I "move in" with you? Actually, if you do know of a good mailbox service there, let me know. I am still considering moving my domicile. For now, I will be a resident of IA.
If you have any questions for me, PM me, so I know, as the deadline for ACE apps is on Monday. May be worth looking!
