Mitch...Wish I would have seen this thread much sooner. This whole healthcare thing has been quite the nightmare for me! I am still in my 50's, so don't have SS. I know many RVers with no health ins, but I was always advised to not leave a gap in coverage. I have been, basically, insurance poor as a full time RVer. When I got divorced and started workamping for a living, I lowered my plan to the BCBS Blue Basics plan, to save money on premiums. My domicile is in SD, so looked into ACA there. The plans won't cover me nationwide. So much for being an RV friendly state  They also raised vehicle registration fees last June. My DB offered to let me use his address in TN, so I looked into ACA there. OMG! I was so excited that I applied, only to have my brother say he hadn't heard back from his attorney on any problems letting me use his address. WHAT THE HECK???? Needless to say, I had to scurry, as the deadline approaches. Didn't want to have any more issues with my DB over this. My DM, in IA, had already said I could use her address. My previous ACA research had kept saying I qualify for Medicaid and wouldn't let me buy a plan. The good thing is that I could cancel my application in TN. The bad thing is that when you want to back up, while you're applying, you have to start all over. I did this many times, trying to get around the Medicaid thing. Even my ins broker couldn't figure out how to do it. I even called the help line and the gal there finally told me that I could file an appeal on the Medicaid decision. REALLY??? I am on unemployment, now, and my income for this year is only an estimate, so I finally estimated higher and BINGO!!! I got it narrowed down to 2 plans that have nationwide coverage. Had a hard time deciding, but finally did. I called my BCBS and they said I could pay for the one month I have left before my ACA begins. I just had to write them a letter, asking them to cancel my plan, effective May 1, and enclose a check for the one month.

The only health question they ask, on the healthcare.gov website, is if you smoke or have smoked in the past 4 months, or something like that. No other health history.

It's not a done deal, Mitch, until you pay your first month. That is why I could cancel my application in TN. You can also plug in info, without applying, just to see what you would qualify for and the plans offered. The reason I really wanted to go with TN is because they offer BCBS, which is nationwide....and cheap!!! With my low income, my premiums would have been $12 something a month  That was a Silver plan, too! My vehicle registrations would only be, what, $70.50 each? Can I "move in" with you? Actually, if you do know of a good mailbox service there, let me know. I am still considering moving my domicile. For now, I will be a resident of IA.

If you have any questions for me, PM me, so I know, as the deadline for ACE apps is on Monday. May be worth looking!

I found this online. Might offer some info you didn't know.

Yes, TN has a ton of available plans. Wish I could get $12/month premiums!

Open enrollment starts again October 1, so I've decided to wait until then - take my time to consider all the options. My COBRA doesn't end until November 30, so I'll just bite that $920 monthly bullet until then.

Car registration is $64 and my trailer was around $13. TN has no income tax, but a higher sales tax.

Insurance should also be a reason for choosing a domicile. People have always chosen because of lack of income tax, but things like insurance rates and vehicle plate rates is also important. Both vehicle insurance and even medical insurance rates are based on your home location. For example, I used to live in Michigan where license plates were based on vehicle weight. My license plates in Michigan would have cost me $300 per year, but are only $64 a year in Ohio. (I had been paying about $150 for my minivan I sold.) I heard of someone online paying $1,200! That amount would make up for a LOT of income tax.

Some states have literally dozens of available ACA plans, while others have very few. I think if I did not have Medicare, I would want to have a residence in a state with a lot of plans available, and lower rates.

More things to think about, that's for sure.

Mitch, I understand waiting. I still may want to switch to TN, if there is a good place for mail forwarding. I would appreciate any info. The savings will help me more than you know! Trust me...the low premiums indicate LOW INCOME :|

I don't know anything about mail forwarding - never had a need to use that type of service. All I can recommend is a google maps search. Pick your city and see what comes up.

When I looked at TN - way back when - it wasn't easy to use and claim to live there if just using a mail service. Things could have changed since then. If you have a real address to use - maybe you could make it work. Some states like full-timers, others aren't so nice about it.

Not feeling good about using my brother's address. I know how he can be, sometimes. Hoping someone has info about using mail forwarding, etc.

We have mail forwarding in Pensacola, Fl. That is our "official address" for credit cars, etc. since we are FL residents. We contact them when we want our mail sent wherever we are. Never had a problem. It may be through "Good Sam". I can check with Bob when he gets home if you are interested.

Linda, this is a good article regarding choosing a state for residency:

Not often but this time I am glad I am old enough to be on medicare... my supplement is $29 per month... I so have an agent or broker that figures out the best plan for me. My other one was going up to $100...
I simply do not know how you pay these hundreds of dollars per month... it is so sad that all of the money you work so hard for goes up in smoke...

And I have mail forwarding out of Crestview, FL. Also Good Sam affiliated. Works great. I can get items opened, scanned if needed, or forwarded where ever I am in the US. I have things like dr. Bills scanned so I can pay them online immediately.

I previously lived in TN, but selected SD as our residence including mail forwarding when we went full-time. Years ago there was a mail forwarding company in TN but it went out of business I was told. I know of none in TN. Maybe you should ask that question on the rv.net forum because that is how I learned about SD. I know when we went full-time in 2009, TN was considered not RV friendly. The two main choices were SD and TX. However I'm sure health care is now a major concern for those who are full-time and aren't on Medicare yet. Good luck with finding what will work for you.

After reading all of this I realize just how lucky I am. I have my insurance thru PERS (Public Employee Retirement ). I was harping that I was PO'd because my premiums had gone up 75 bucks in 9 years. Then I heard what some of you guys were paying so I called PERS and apologised for calling them blood sucking zombies. Now I'm on Medicare and getting my back-up insurance thru them. Not only is the back-up insurance free (Anthem BC) but they reimburse me every month the 104 that I pay the guvmint for my medicare. I basically just got a 350 dollar raise. And now I'm covered no matter where I'm at as long as I use a doc that takes medicare. Whatever medicare doesn't cover Anthem picks up including any co-pays. Now I'm waiting to see if medicare pays for the bone density test I had today. CID wasn't sure but said it's preventive so they should. We'll see, I may be back on here screaming about blood sucking zombies again. LOL!
