Does this sound safe?

Ya, it's not for everyone. I've gone back to the "simpler is better" for now. We previously travelled in a 28' Holiday Alumalite motorhome, and before that a larger bumper pull. I'm having the time of my life in this little teardrop I go more than I did before, spending about 50 nights a year camping. Of course I'm not working around kids' schedules anymore, either.

I really like your set up, sure wish our brand new Forester could tow it!

The owners' forum recommends a minimum tow capacity of 3,500. My Jeep is capacity is 5,000. I don't know what the Forester's capacity is....

Only #1500 on the New 2014's. Although I looked up weight on the T@B without a bathroom or kitchen and it showed a tow weight of under #1500: http://tab-rv.com/features-specs/ I know you have to factor in weight of the contents and such but not sure why they'd say you need to be able to tow #3500?

T@Bs are now made by Little Guy trailers and are lighter. I have a Dutchmen at over 1900 lbs

Back to the original subject of this post...is it safe? I've gotten so many differing opinions about carrying a weapon when I travel to alaska. Guns are not my thing. But being the victim of violence isn't, either. Maybe I'll get a bow and arrow.

Judi, do not carry a gun into Canada! If they search you and find a gun, you will lose everything! If you try to take pepper spray they take that away also! I felt safe 99% of the time while living on the road. If the area didn't feel safe, I just moved to another area. I've stayed in rest stops and all sorts of truck stops. Go buy a small baseball bat and if someone attempts to get into your rig, hit them straight into the stomach. I know lots of women carry guns. I never wanted one. lyn

Lyn, I did find out about not carrying guns into Canada, but you cab take a hunting rifle. However, I think I will not be getting a gun. I'm just not comfortable with that whole idea.

Safety on the road has a lot to do with situational awareness. That is being aware of what's happening around and spotting possible issues. Common sense goes a long way. Where you park and how you move around the parking lot. Example truck stop parking: I tried to time it to were I could park toward the front where it was light and people were around. I would not walk up between the trucks where someone could jump me but walked around to stay "in the road". I would not leave my truck in the middle of the night (had a port-a-potty in truck). Sometimes due to log book issues and hours allowed to drive I ended up in less than ideal locations but always tried to optimize my options. Tried to park in such a way that I would not be blocked in or trapped. While it might have been temping to nose in for privacy that isolation could have also made me a target. Listen to your gut or that little voice that says no. I've learned not to ignore it.

As for firearms I am licensed to carry a handgun in 36 states. The laws governing transportation of fire arms are confusing and vary state to state. While Federal law might cover you while you are moving once you stop for fuel or the night, then state laws kick in. Some states like IL, NY, CT and MD are just not worth even having a NRA sticker on your vehicle. If I was in Alaska I'd have a fire arm for protection against animals but I would ship it from gun store to gun store and not travel with it.

In some states pepper spray is covered under concealed weapons laws or are illegal.
