Bird Count

Sparkle's bird census comment on another thread (totally different context, but I sometimes connect the dots strangly) reminded me that I had missed the Great American Backyard Bird Count for the first time in several years. It was this past weekend. However, there is another year round program associated with this project plus a few others. Thought some of you might be interested. Participation is free. This is a joint project between Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. Data collection is classified as a citizen- science project.

There is another program for winter feeder watchers but it has a small fee associated with it.

Thanks for this link....I would have loved to have participated in this, as I know that many of our once-popular songbirds that used to visit my birdfeeders in the winters are no longer here. Climate change is drastically changing the nesting and breeding locations of many of our birds.

Last year while camphosting in GA, we participated in the Humming Bird count going north....don't remember what the link was...but it was fun...

There is another count that astromeners do. Every year they list the named stars they can see from their backyard with the naked eye. A lot of States have agreed to cut back on pollution and ambient light. So the count goes way down and then comes back as conditions improve.

It is not too late to start. Take a closer look at the e-bird, a year round count. There are photo contests too - The pink ibis posted by Liz could have won a group category.
