RV Insurance

I have some neighbors who have just ordered a new TT and tow vehicle and will be bringing them north with them when they com eup from FL for the summer months. She was asking me about RV insurance yesterday and what kind I have etc. Told her that State Farm covers my TT. But she is wondering what's out there and what kind of experiences anybody's had with different insurance companies. So after searching this site for some info and finding it's getting too complicated sorting our from health, homeowners and car insurances threads on here, I thought I would throw it out for your comments. I'm sure there are some new people who would probably like to know as well. So fire away....

Sue, after being dropped from Nationwide after being with them for 30+ years because they said they no longer insured RV's (although they recanted and offered to for an exorbitant fee), we are now insured through Hartford Insurance with AARP. We are now paying less than 50% of what Nationwide charged us. So far so good, although we never had any claims with either company.

I have Progressive. Will do some research on prices when next premium payment is due in May. Preliminary research shows Geico might be cheaper.

I had Hartford at one time and when I had a booboo that involved only me, they raised my rates higher than what the repairs would have cost out of pocket.

Anita, did you have regular Hartford, or Hartford though AARP? I had a claim with Hartford through AARP and my rates went down after. Have them now and they also have full-time policies and if you have that, they include a good RV roadside assistance. I know Liz had them with her accident and totaled RT, so hopefully she'll chime in also.

There is a thread on another forum I belong to on this subject and the only carrier getting really bad reviews is Geico.

Whatever carriers you look at, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. They have tendencies to quote differently and make it hard sometimes.

I have mine through Allstate with the rest of my insurance. There are different levels of coverage and some include replacement. This might help http://rvinsurance.org/coverage/

As an addendum to my previous post, we pay $ 861.00 per year for coverage on our motorhome, Steve's pickup truck, my Buick and our Mercedes. This is with a $ 1000 deductible on all vehicles. Previously, when we were with Nationwide, we were paying $ 1400 every six months for the same vehicles.

I have Hartford thru AARP on both my vehicles. I had hail damage to my pickup and they fixed it with no trouble at all. I like them.

I also switched to Hartford this year for the RV but needed to rejoin AARP. Have never had any claims.

I also have Hartford thru AARP on both the van and RV. Was shocked when shopping for insurance for the RV at how much cheaper they were. I already had the van and house with Hartford but not thru AARP. Moved the van to the AARP policy and would have moved the house too but they would not take it due to recent (2010) claims from tornado damage (will take house after 5 years with no claims). BTW: Had no problems with other Hartford in settling the tornado claims; in fact was very pleased with them.
