Sorry if I sounded harsh, but the same thing happened to me. I "sold" a car to my brother. He still owes me $800 which I will never get. The biggest problem was the parking tickets I got more than a year afterwards since I had left the plates on the car!

My parents bailed my brother out from the time he was a small boy until they were both dead. He lied to both of them about needing money, and they got themselves into a lot of debt giving it to him. Instead of growing up like most adults do, he has ended up in extremely poor health due to alcohol and drugs, and having almost no one in the family speaking to him. (I confess that I did bail him out again last summer for his rent, but I did it because he is in a wheelchair in a drug-free subsidized apartment and I did not want him homeless and away from friends who take care of him.) He is on the opposite side of the country from his kids who do not speak to him.

It is very hard to have family members put you in jeopardy, so I hope you can get away from it soon.

Yep, been there, done that with the son, too.... Needless to say, no money crosses hands anymore....Mom and Dad are no longer the "bank"....We learned the hard way and he knows that we are here for him for all the moral support and love he needs....but no more money....Thank goodness, he seems to have learned and has mature some in that department....(I hope... ) as it's been a couple of years since we closed the "Bank of Mom & Dad".....

Hope things work out for you, Ava, and you are moved into your "home on wheels" real soon...

I just called my County Clerk's office about transferring the Mobile Marlin's title over to Nancy. I was told that coming to their office would be unnecessary, and anyay, since she lives in AR, all the re-titling has to be done there.

All Nancy and I need to do it execute a Bill of Sale (vin number, date of sale, amount of sale, signature of both parties) and for me to sign the back of the title.

That's it.

Yes, Mitch, that is exactly what I did with my brother. Problem was he never took the bill of sale into the Secretary of State in his new state to change the registration, so it was still titled in my name. Michigan sent me parking tickets because I was still the owner of record.

I looked this up on a couple of web sites and one says, "The Vehicle Bill of Sale represents the transfer of the RIGHT to ownership. The vehicle’s certificate of title represents ACTUAL ownership and is required in every state." http://www.rocketlawyer.com/article/changing-vehicle-ownership---getting-a-car-title-transferred-with-the-dmv.rl

Here is what Minnesota says about selling a vehicle without transferring the title: "If the buyer gets in an accident in the vehicle, the seller could be sued as the "owner" of the vehicle. This can be a very costly risk for the seller who does not properly transfer title. If the vehicle is impounded, the government may require the seller to pay the charges of towing and/or storage of the vehicle." http://www.mncourts.gov/selfhelp/?page=311

For the sake of argument (I know there will be no problem with Nancy), how is one to facilitate the title transfer to an out-of-state party?
