Murals of St Cloud, FL

St Cloud Florida is about 5 miles east of Kissimmee on U.S. Highway 192. Much of the business activity in both towns is centered along this highway. The average tourist staying in the area and mainly interested in Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and the other big attractions will hardly be aware of the real St Cloud. It is only when you get off the highway and go into the town that you will be able to enjoy the small town charm.

St Cloud was incorporated in 1915, and the downtown areas still features historic old buildings from that era. In addition to the interesting downtown section, St Cloud has developed a beautiful park on the south shore of Lake Toho. The park includes walking and biking trails and a nice marina. Think we may visit that park later today.

Many of the old buildings in the historic district have been decorated with murals of historic significance.
We only found a few of them before my camera battery died. Unfortunately I do not have a narrative to post along with the pictures but hope you enjoy anyway.

Apparently there was a very destructive fire in 1917

Thanks for the pictures Sarah, I especially liked the ones of the church, the school and the train station. I am always surprised at some of the towns in Florida, I somehow think it is all very modern. St Cloud looks like it could be here in So IL.

Interesting post, Sarah. Sometimes we miss the most interesting things close to home.

Thanks for showing us St. Cloud's murals, Sarah. Forty-plus years ago the streets there were sand. That was before Disney World came to town, of course.
I lived in Central Florida (Sebring) for 15 years, and it's just lovely there. I used to make my German motel guests drive back to the Miami airport via US 27 instead of I-75. The Germans seem to appreciate the most an "authentic experience," and would be so surprised to see all the orange groves and ranches and cowboys. And Sebring is on a large lake, Lake Jackson, and has a lovely circle park in the center of the little downtown. US 27 is now busy through there, but when you leave it and go into the small towns, you will see how nice it is.

Whenever I am on a road trip, I try to find the little downtown areas when looking for a place to eat. The downtown diners/cafes/'greasy spoons' have the best food. I look for pickup trucks and other signs of the locals since they know the best places to eat in town.
I like to see towns that have character and try to keep their towns clean, charming and interesting.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
