Braking system????

I have been gathering estimates on a tow system for my 24' Chinook and Honda Element. Does everyone driving a B or C have a "braking system" and would you feel safe without it? The price quoted me for the whole enchilada was nearly $2900. and that's without the tow bar which I am getting from the guy I bought the coach from. I had them break down the prices and started searching online for the same equipment. I was able to save over $400. if I purchased the same parts as them. I am now looking around to see if I can find another RV place for installation that isn't $105/hr. If I did not install the brake system, which is a SMI Stay In Play, that would reduce my cost significantly, maybe as much as $1350+ which is parts and labor. I know that it is becoming required in most states. So do I take this first trip with just the base plates and light kit or do I install the braking system. I also considered a tow dolly but don't know how much is involved in that hook-up. I have read on some blogs that they have gotten in tight spots and had to unhook the toad to maneuver, which I assume would be easier than the tow dolly. I can order the Stay In Play on sale from PPL but have to do it by 2/14 which would not be a big deal to return if I didn't use it.

I haven't towed a car yet so don't know a lot about towing. I bought a Honda CR-V last year in case I ever want to tow. I think you are headed to the mountains so I would sure get a braking system if it was me. What size engine does your motorhome have and have you checked to see how much you can tow? I went to Colorado in a 24' motorhome with a small engine and I was lucky to get up some of the mountains and I sure couldn't have towed anything.

Thanks for the input. I found the thread on braking systems and decided that this is one of those places you should not spare the expense. I have a Chevy 454 engine in my coach and will be towing an '05 Honda Element. Should I purchase the safety cables as well?

yes on the safety cables.... I have the Stay and Play system and love its simplicity. You sometimes have to have a switch added to the toad that switched off the electrical inside so that it does not drain the battery. My shop added a switch that puts a trickle charge from the Chevy engine to the Honda that has the same effect.....when I am running down the road.

Are you referring when the key is in the accessory position and the switch turns it off once you are stopped so you don't forget to turn the key off? Where is the switch located? Thanks for the suggestion.

My switch was added under the dash and makes sure that there is a trickle charge to the car battery when ever the Stay and Play is connected and working the lights and brakes on the car....

So yes the key would be in the ancillary position was the car gets towed down the road....
