travel weather

Postby Lopo » Wed Jan 29, 2014 9:14 pm

I'm not used to traveling in winter, and I'm trying to figure out how to get through the Southeast to the desert and California - soon! I'm dying to get on the road, but don't really have a schedule. Lately, as soon as one front clears down here in Florida, another one heads down to my route (along 1-10 or 1-20). Does anyone have a suggestion of a good site or app for tracking weather for road travel? I am thinking of hiring a Virtual Assistant (one of those people who sit in India and take care of whatever we need here) just to watch the weather and pick my route! Sure, I could drive in rotten weather, but since I have a choice, I choose not to. ;0

I use weather.com a lot I pick my route and check cities a long the way before I leave (they have it for the day 5 days 10 days ect) would usually
look at the 5 day so I could see ahead and then hope that it was correct....its hard knowing what to do but hunkering down when the weather is bad is a good idea...just be flexible and know that this weather is abnormal and one day it will end!! be safe in your travels

Just throw caution to the wind (or rain, or cold) & go for it! :D

I agree. Just check the weather and go. You might want to find a couple of places to stay for that day so you can set somewhere until it gets better. I would probably take the most southern expressway possible, so that I would only have to deal with rain, and not snow.

My attitude is that I have to stay somewhere, so I might as well keep on the move slowly and at least be headed towards my goal.

I see that Florida is having some bad rains, but there will be some breaks in it eventually. Once you get past the Mississippi, all will be well.

I have been aiming for clear sailing after the Mississippi, and then got an email from an old friend who has given up RV'ing telling me about the winds and sand being blown through cracks in his motorhome out west! Good grief. That surely is not a common event, right? ;)

And Vickie, you know if I make it as far west as your place, you'll be kidnapped as my travel buddy for braving the howling weather, right?? ;)

Thanks, Carol! That is very much what I was looking for, but had missed somehow. I've added it to my Home Screen!

Liz recommended Weatherbug for me last summer. I've been happy with it so far but I usually check at least one other site also.

Pocket Express is one app I have enjoyed for years on my IPhone4 and a previous smartphone. Not only is it free, it has both AP news and a weather application that includes local radar. You can set the weather for a zip code or the current location. The radar function is usually broad enough to see more than one state.

I use the AP News function when I am bored and waiting for something.
