Credit Card Fraud

While I was with Carolb in New England this past October, there was an attempted use of my Bank of America Visa by someone online. A new card was sent to my daughter in Washington State and I didn't get it until December. This card is used for fuel only. Someone made a call to Bank of America Friday with questions about my account and they tried to use it in Arizona. I got the fraud call this morning. I called them back with some info after the account had been closed. In that time, someone had tried to use the card in Istanbul!

The strange thing is that the person who called in used LeRoy's name and wanted to know who the primary card holder was because he couldn't remember! I put him on the account for the Alaska trip. However, his new card was still in my safe so how did they know to use his name? Whoever it was said the primary holder must be one of his grandsons and he would call back - which he didn't.

The piece of advice I got was to wiggle the card reader on fuel pumps before inserting the card. If the card reader comes off, don't use it.

Wow Anita, I'm glad they caught it! Good advice about the card reader. I've heard about people adding things on there to steal the card info.

When Mitch was here, we went to Target. It had been years since I had been there, so I'll blame her. I received the notices about card info being compromised & have been checking my accounts every day. My bank sent me a new card today.

Vickie, I actually went to Target out of the blue on 'the day' after having not been in a long while, but I can't blame Mitch! I used a different card than the one having problems now and so far, so good.

Thanks for the advice about wiggling the card holder on the gas pump. I'll pass that along to my hubby; he gets his gas with a business debit card.

I've been thining of getting a gas credit card for traveling instead of using my Visa debit card for gas. But the prevalence of stations differ across the country, don't they? Or is BP everywhere?

I don't think they are all over. Maybe get a Visa just for traveling.

They say not to use Debit cards because if they're compromised the bad guys can clean out your bank account before you even know there's a problem. With credit cards they are looking for unusual attempted purchases. I actually got a phone call from Chase when someone tried to buy baby clothes (about $300) and makeup (anaother $300) on line. Don't think I've spent $300 on makeup in my entire life.
