Our friends, Andy & Gwen, gave us a boat trip for Christmas, so yesterday we took it with Gwen.....
back row: Gwen and Boat Capt. Nicki
front: me and Ernie
Capt. Nicki owns and operates her own boat tours of the area to include the salt marshes, the rivers, channels a.k.a. "cuts" between them and some of the local islands for wild life and bird watching, kayak tour guides, and history from the water...We toured the Altamaha River with "Cuts" dug by rice plantation slaves in the early 1800s and the boat lanes that take the shrimp fleet out to the ocean to fish...Nicki is very knowledgeable on local wild life, birds, and history of the area....
I must tell you that she is very good at what she does....so let's get going...
We left the pier at Darien, GA around Noon...and on our way up river we saw a few dolphins fishing and playing...My photos of them were so awful I didn't even save them...
We were out to find what ever wild life we could find....
A raccoon sleeping in a tree.
Some type of water foul that I can't name...
But mostly, we saw Eagles!!
Mature ones with nests...
And a younger one who has almost got most of his white head feathers.
My best Eagle photo of the day...The young Eagle in his glory....
Here we have the Darien, GA shrimp fleet...The shrimp season is over for now, but come April, the town will have it's "Blessing of the Fleet" fest at the start of shrimp season and then they'll all be out....
So, if any of you are interested in taking Capt. Nicki's tour, I'll get you her info, plus info on 2 of the local campgrounds here...which Ernie & I find nice...
Hope you enjoyed the trip on the river....
