Michelin Tire Recall Lessons Learned

Postby JudyJB » Sat Jan 04, 2014 12:58 am

I had heard of this tire recall and because my tires were not the sizes listed and I knew my vehicle was older than the dates listed, I checked it and then ignored it: http://www.michelinman.com/voluntary-safety-recall.page

However, I did not realize there was more than one recall. My tire size (LTX M/S LT 225/75R16) was listed under this more recent recall: http://www.michelinman.com/safety-recall.page?Wt.mc_id=Paid%252520Search%3bGoogle%3bmichelin%2520tire%2520recall&WT.srch=1&mkwid=sqNApMrRe&gclid=CIHVo4rp47sCFdNrfgodRlYAZg

I guess my point is that you should not do what I did and assume that there are not multiple recalls.

Also, I took some photos of the tire that was replaced in October, but I should have taken photos of the entire tire, including all numbers before the tire dealer took it to dispose of it! If I had, it would be easier to get reimbursed now for that tire. I am going to contact Michelin on Monday and send them the photos of the partial numbers that I do have. They should realize that I had 7 tires on my vehicle and if 6 were verified as belonging to that category, it is very likely the 7th was as well.

Luckily, I DO save all receipts of work done. Hope I can get the $250 I spent on that tire.

Good for you Judy. You should get reimbursement!! I had all new Michelin tires put on my car last year. Guess I should check them also.

They only had two tires in the local warehouse, so had to order 4 more from places like Phoenix. They will be in within a week or so, so I will stop by again on my way back from Anaheim and Laguna Beach.

Thanks for posting... My tires are not under recall & I double checked today. What I am really upset about, being as it cost me over $2,100 for 6 tires to be installed, is they have refused the lousy $70 rebate that I applied for during that offer. Their response is because my RV place bought them & installed them instead of a Michelin dealer, that I do not qualify for the rebate. I am livid !!!! and of course will never buy Michelin tires again !! It's only $70 but that was for 4 tires & I bought 6.... customer service is a thing of the past....

Can a Michelin dealer handle putting the tires on an RV? If not, I would use that argument with Michelin. If they tried and dropped your RV a lot of damage could be done.

Some can. Some can't. First one I called could not because it did not have right jacks.

Technically, if your RV place bought the tires, then sold them to you then they are a "dealer" by definition. Google "define dealer":

Dealer: (noun) "A person or business that buys and sells goods"

Most of these "rebate" deals (for all kinds of things, not just tires) are so much b.s., used to get a person to buy the product without the product being "on sale". 90% of the time when I have applied for a rebate for something I never receive the rebate, and I never hear another word from the company, even when I have tried writing - sending my letter Certified Mail - to the company.

Which brings me to the inescapable conclusion that most "rebates" are total and complete scams. I no longer will buy a product that offers a "rebate". I will buy a competitor's product at the same or similar price, because without the rebate the price is basically the same - or sometimes even less from the competitor.

I wish "60 Minutes" would do a segment on this. I am sure that I am not the only person who has been burned by these "rebate" schemes.

Since I have the same motorhome you do, Judy, I am assuming I will have to have my Michelin tires replaced as well. I will follow up on this in the next few days. Glad you posted about this recall as I have never received a notice and would not have known about the recall otherwise.

Er. . . hrm.

I must be missing something here.

After having one blowout, with the possibility of another due to the fact that all the tires on your vehicle are under recall. . . you are still driving about on L.A. freeways while waiting a week for the rest of your tires to be replaced?

Sorry, I'm confused.

Thanks for commenting Anne... after I posted I thought maybe I shouldn't have voiced my opinion. My RV shop did not qualify under Michelin terms because, per Michelin, they were not a 'certified' dealer.... now there's another bunch of BS... if a tire shop sells a brand tire along with other brands or if a 'shop' like mine buys & installs them, Michelin still makes their $$$$ so why not honor the rebate ? Personally, I think they offer these rebates to entice customers to buy the product so they can make those $$$... I am still angry... it is the principle of it all (which in my opinion is close to fraud!)
Thanks for letting me spout off... but I still won't ever buy Michelin tires again.............that'll show 'em....

Judy, thanks for posting about the second recall. I believe the tires on my Grand Cherokee may be involved.

I've driven 33,000 miles on them in the last 20 months, so I should be OK. No choice, really, because the replacement Michelin tires are in very short supply because of all the recalls. And I only have to drive about 125 miles between now and then, so I should be OK. If they come in by Friday, I could come back here to get them this coming Saturday.

My tires were dated summer 2011 when my vehicle was built, so a lot of us have been driving on these things for a long time since the recall was not announced until December 13, 2013.

I can assure you, I will be driving even more slowly and carefully than usual.

And, yes, AOKAY, please get your tires checked ASAP. I'd be willing to bet you have those tires also, even though your vehicle is a year newer than mine. They were apparently still putting them on Fleetwoods until early last summer.
