Good news! All of my tires are part of the recall. I had checked the list but had believed that my tires were made previous to the bad batch. So here is the history of the three tires I have had to replace so far this year (2013):
- (Tire 1) had a tire way back in May that had a slit in it. I replaced it in Michigan. About two weeks ago, I got a phone call with a message that the new tire I bought to replace it was on the recall list announced on 12/13/2013, and I should see a Michelin dealer. It was replaced today with a new tire. No charge.
- (Tire 2) I had a blowout on October 24, 2013. I bought a new tire to replace it. Unfortunately that dealer did not check it for the recall, so I probably can't get a refund, but I am going to ask Michelin.
- (Tire 3) I had a blowout yesterday. The dealer today checked that tire, and it is part of the recall, so they replaced it. No charge.
- (Tires 4-7) The dealer checked the remaining four tires on my vehicle and all four are on the recall list. They could not replace them today because they did not have any tires in stock or in the nearby warehouse. They ordered them from various cities across the west and will have them for me in 7-10 days. No charge.
So, within a couple of weeks, I will have six brand new tires! I have ended up buying two new tires this year that I probably can not get a refund for. I think the first tire with the slit was really not the sidewall separation that was bad, but had I known, it would have been part of the recall.
I really should have taken my whole vehicle in way last early spring to get all my tires checked. Apparently, I did not do a good enough job checking the numbers myself.
I feel a lot better today knowing that the blowouts were not my fault and that the new tires should perform a lot better. I also will have all new tires on my vehicle, so I should not have to buy any new ones for several years. Whew!
