Got a Jury Summons in the mail today...I have only been
a Florida resident for 1 year...they sure don't waste time
anyway the problem is that it is the same day that I pick my
sister up at the air port ...3 days before the Hillsborough GTG!!!
I am going to try and get I postponed for 30 days...
What to you all do ...when travel is planned or you all that
full time...???

I do the jury duty. I think it's our responsibility. Actually, I have always found it interesting.

I always rearranged my schedule when called before full-timing. Have never been called since I've been full-time. Would have to plead distance.

Oh I didn't mean I was going to not do the duty....
Its just that my sister already has the plane ticket paid for
time off for work and all that.. she is flying in from Pennsylvania
Hillsboro is paid for. I just want to postpone it...
I was just wondering how people traveling around the country for months on end
handled it..

And I wasn't saying you were trying to get out of it! Sorry if that was misinterpreted! Can you contact them and ask about changing dates?

Donna,
Are you sure it's an actual summons and not a questionnaire? In Illinois, we get the questionnaire first, and can note which times are best for us.

Try to rearrange my schedule, but several times I have postponed. I learned a hard lesson once when I had business travel planned and figured there was little chance of my being selected. I sweated through a whole day of them going through 90% of the pool I was in.

From now on, I postpone to a time I know I can make it.

Where I live you have to report in on the first day (Monday) but then you can ask them to reschedule the jury duty. Sometimes people just can not reschedule their personal lives to accommodate the courts. Surgery, weddings, funerals, etc. are just things that happen. The courts know this and are usually willing to reschedule. They're just glad to have a willing juror even if you can't serve when first called.

I always found that they would reschedule around my work obligation. Long ago, I had to go down to the court on my first assigned day to ask for rescheduling, but now that can be done with a phone call. Also, in MI we don't have to show up and wait around every day; that, too, is handled by phone. It's all much easier.

Oddly enough, even though I've been summoned for jury duty several times, I've never been on a jury. They've always filled the seats before reaching my end of the pool.

I don't know how the Florida system works, but I'd start with phoning the court.

I am a full-timer thus my flippant answer because I don't want the hassle of explaining to someone who doesn't understand. I had a driver's license agent tell me I wasn't a state resident because I don't live there - the Dept of Revenue disagrees with him.

Oh I'm sorry - I didn't mean to imply that anyone was not doing their "duty". I have had to postpone when I was working full time. I think most places are willing to postpone, but if you do so over and over again they probably take notice. When I was living in California I was chosen for a jury but I was also working on a large project and the delay would have cost the client (Johns Hopkins) a great deal of money. I was excused but in a way I was disappointed because it was an interesting case. Another time a bunch of us were sitting in the jury box for questioning and I started chatting with the woman beside me. We had a lot in common because both of us have 7 children. When she was being questioned it was revealed that 4 of her children were in prison for violent crimes. Needless to say, she was dismissed in a heart beat.

Donna, postpone and enjoy your time with your sister and at the GTG!

Where I live in California, you can ask for a 90-day extension. I did that once due to scheduled surgery, and they never asked me to come at the later date.
