Ice in Death Valley & a Coyote Close-up

I was driving past the little creek that goes by the Furnace Creek campground about 9:00 am this morning and saw a thin layer of ice on the creek. Can you believe it?? I have a small outdoor thermometer that measures highs and lows every 24 hours, and it showed a low of 25 last night.



Also, as I was leaving Scotty's Castle, I saw this coyote up on the embankment right across from the entrance driveway. She stayed around for several close-ups!




She looked in pretty good shape for a desert coyote! She was staring at the castle, so maybe someone was sneaking her snacks.

Many years ago I saw a coyote in the desert around Edwards Air Force Base in California. It looked awful--fur looked like it had mange, tongue hanging out the side of its mouth, skinny. If I had had water, I would have left it some and some food! That's why I was surprised this one looked so healthy. Even her fur was nice.

Glad coyotes can do so well in the desert.

Great coyote pic!

I was there with a friend several years ago and a coyote stepped out into the middle of the road and posed for us. Think he/she was used to doing that and people would feed it. It finally figured out it wasn't getting anything from the cheapo girlies and went on its way. DH and I were in DV many years ago in a jeep, we had taken the back way in from Dumont Dunes in Feb and it snowed in Furnace Creek. It was cold!! LOL!

Good pix Judy - thanks for sharing. The coyote looks healthy and furry compared to the scroungy ones I've seen. Enjoy your time in Death Valley - it's so unusual there.

An hour ago saw another one trotting through the campground, but I did not have my camera with me. Darn. It was a lighter color and more even in coloring. The rangers say they are not being fed, to their knowledge, but cut through the campground to the creek. Since there is more vegetation here, there are apparently more bunnies and rodents.

I love the sounds of coyotes howling in the night. Won't open my window because of the cold, but I will listen tonight.
