Where's Annie?

Postby Anniepoo » Mon Nov 18, 2013 3:59 pm

I'm on the road, finally, after almost 10 years living in an RV, I'm doing the traveling thing.

I spent yesterday in Livermore, drove to Vacaville last night.
Had a wonderful moment on the road, I took 160, a minor highway, up towards Isleton, and passed right among the wind generators.
Pretty amazing coming up on those giant machines in the middle of the night!

Today's a work day. I'm thinking of heading to Malakoff Diggins tomorrow. Never seen them, and want to.
When I die I'm gonna be cremated. I can't stand the idea of spending eternity in a box with no wheels.

somehow I thought people would have limited interest in pix of the Vacaville Home Depot, where I spent last night.

Saw lots of fun stuff going thru the delta, but it was dark.

Rain!

Postby Anniepoo » Wed Nov 20, 2013 1:38 pm

Rain, rain, go away!

Start north. Somewhere around Dunnigan it's getting dark and raining and I pull into a desultory RV park to
crawl into bed.

Beth told me I gotta have pix, so here's I-5 headed norht in the rain near Dunnigan - whoo hoo!

The neighbor turns out to have heard the word of the lard, and won't leave me alone til I have too... eventually
get her outta my hair and turn in.

Turns out that 'the vents are ok, but those things always leak after a bit, you might want to replace the lids' translates to
'heck yes, they leak'

http://www.pathwayslms.com/rv/oregon/foo0.png

After a fairly miserable night, I get on the road early to avoid jah-eeezuz and get outta the rainy cabover, and head north.

The rain lets up, and I pull in a willows DMV and deal with the new RV's paperwork - incidentally, if you have to do paperwork,
small town DMV's are always faaaaar better ... I was 3rd in line , everybodty was friendly, it was painless

At camping world they put in one vent, I stay overnight, they're putting in #2 right now, it's 10:30 - these people are a bit slow,
and have an amazing amount of paperwork, but are doing good work at really great prices (suprisingly - $80 each with parts for an installed vent (not just lid, whole thing) is great).

Corvallis

Postby Anniepoo » Fri Nov 22, 2013 2:51 pm

8cD I've arrived!

Camping World finished the vent,
I got out of Anderson, got to Ashland when I'd had enough of mountain driving. Dummy me, I forgot I had the electric fuel pump, I never used
it the whole way here.

Wednesday night pulled into the 'wild goose' restaurant in Ashland. They were pleasant, served a decent steak, and when I asked if there was
a wal mart I could overnight in, the gal offered me the use of a parking area behind the restaurant.

COOLD! Next morning there's frost on the ground. Fortunately I've got a Mr Buddy.

Grab breakfast at the Wild Goose and I'm on the road. For the first time I can see the scenery, as the rain's finally let up.

Suprise - I knew you couldn't pump your own gas in Oregon, but was pleased to see gas station attendant's become a "women's job" - I have yet to have a male pump attendant.

At some point my fanny's sore and I'm feeling peckish and pull off at Peggy's Diner, somewhere. Decent burger. Snap a pic of the don't
feed the bears sign

and, since the rain's let up, finally get a chance to snap a pic of my new home

http://www.pathwayslms.com/rv/oregon/anderson2.png

At Eugene I'm feeling sleepy, I pull off and sleep a few hours in a walmart lot, meet a friendly couple in
an older RV

I get up and get on the road, and other than a stop for a snack in Albany, come on in.

You can tell you're in Oregon when you see these beauties

Get to Corvallis, wander about, find a K-mart. Turns out to be just the place for annie - a big parking lot with not a lot of cars,
a K-Mart, a starbucks, an Applebees, and a cinema. It's supper time, near enough, so I have early supper and go watch a couple movies
mostly just to be outta the cold.

The Mr. Buddy warms the RV up, and I have a pretty comfortable night. Up this morning, found another starbucks nearby, and all is well.
Checked out a local RV park - its ideal, its only a couple blocks from where I'd be working when I have to be on campus, and it looks cheap.

8cD That was so much fun, next time I get a little free time I'm going on a trip around Oregon!

So, the spot near OSU didn't work out.

My boss takes me around and we look at RV parks. I end up in Sweet Home, at a park.
I like the people who run the park, they've been friendly.

I've got meetings monday and tuesday, so I'm in Corvallis til mid day tues. After that I head for Sweet Home.

8cD I've already got plans to go on a tour with friends soon as we can arrange it.

The fair grounds in Corvalis is a ok place to stay. I think summer of 08'they charged us $10 a night. Full hookups. In a quiet area near rear of grounds. We found fairgrounds often have a good rv area, as long as it is not fair or other big event. Another fairgrounds in Oregon we stayed in is in Rickreall just east of Salem which has a larger rv area with water and electric plus a dump in a center area.

Still settling in.
Hired a local fellow to scrape my roof. We were also gonna buy a shed, but a disasterous trip down the hill trying to get one convinced me
to forget the shed idea.

Currently have the fridge turned on and filled with food, and predictably, wth my luck, it's not running... grrrrr

Mandysmom, thanks for the advice.

For now I'm happy with the spot in sweet home.

Fridge didn't work on electricity, I had some exciting moments with a load of groceries and no fridge.
Wondered if I was going to lose a load of groceries til I got it running on propane.
Last night it froze, and I'm such a greenhorn (there's a word that's about to die!) that I forgot to leave a tap dripping. I went out and wrestled with the garden hose in the freeze to hook it up, then forgot to open the faucet. So 10pm I run water for iced tea and ooops... frozen! Yikes, this is a crisis -Don't want frozen pipes! Unhook the garden hose, bring in, put it in the shower to warm up.
Back out in the cold and dark, now nearly midnite. Look in the water inlet, I see ice - yikes!
I try to chip it out - no luck. But I'm betting it's just frozen for a few inches back from the inlet. I take the screws holding the inlet off, pull it out a few inches, and wonder how I can warm it.
My physics training comes to the fore, I realize I can melt it with water - latent heat of fusion! I stand there running water over the pipe. This is great fun in 20 degree weather. That's going to be really slow, so I try spraying the water directly into the end of the inlet. That works much better and frees the ice. I hook it up and go back inside. Success! I've got water coming out.
I get wet heavy clothes off and snuggle into bed. Then it hits me - the water from the drip I've set has to be going into my gray tank. I remember all those 'save water' campaigns about how a dripping faucet can waste zillions of gallons, and wonder if I'm going to be up dealing with backflow in the night, as my valve's closed and the sanitary hose is not hooked up.
Relatively warm bed is much more inviting than back outside, so I let the flying spaghetti monster take it and pull the covers up.
Glad to report, this morning things seem fine.
