Going Through Houston

I would always opt for non-rush hour if I can time it right but on my trip back east recently, the tire dealer advised me to sit out an hour or two rather than drive through Dallas. I did not want to wait so just went ahead. Made it through just fine. The speeds were slower. I just had a lot of company.

My city driving philosophy is to time my passing through to avoid traffic. Early Sunday mornings are good. I stick to the main highways that give me the most direct route because there's no guarantee that the round about routes will be trouble free. I think it's all in the timing. If it were me, I'd shoot for early Sunday morning, stay on 10, and buckle up tight.

By the time you make it to the Houston area, you'll be comfortable pulling your rig again. Besides, anyone who backs their rig as well as you do won't have any trouble driving. Get in the middle lane and be the pebble in the stream while you think about that "reward" glass of wine you'll enjoy once you get there.

I have to admit that there are times (like at 6 am in the morning) that I enjoy driving though the cities. I like the scenery of mountains lakes and oceans (I will learn more about deserts this winter) but the Houstons, Washingtons, Detroits, Atlantas and Nashvilles are all part of our land, too. Each city has its own feel and look. But then I have had a lot of experience driving the interstates around and through Cincinnati and Dayton in the car and the rig. And I am not afraid of making a wrong turn....I have lots of experience doing that!

Very well said. I feel the same way. Skylines are beautiful. Even three nearly empty freeway lanes curving around an overpass in the early morning can be beautiful. I also like grafitti, so driving through, usually above, industrial areas can be very pleasant. Yep, 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning with a dog in the passenger seat. It's all good.

Miss Caroline and Miss Martha are gonna be really upset if you don't stop and go to the Crawfish House with them for a meal. They have an appetizer plate of etouffee and rice that is just the perfect size. Nice drive the next day to your next stop.

Mitch actually if you are coming across on 10 it is and it's also going through Quartzsite which I will be at...hoping first week in Dec.
still don't have my truck still have family stuff in SLC so thinking might as well spend T day with family as well then head on down...
Hoping we can do a gtg as well oh and Jenny (SeeYa) is or will be in Yuma depending upon when you will drop on down south

I'm sneaking back into the party after being absent a few months, and just read every reply here because I have a huge issue with Houston. For years I've driven from Florida to Southern Mexico, and everyone says I can't do that without going through Houston, to which I say, just watch me. I am a blue highways driver, but I will travel I-20 so I stay on I-20 until about Marshall or Longview area and then take 2 lane roads until I can get on 59/77. And this has always been in a van, not an RV. You all are impressing the heck out of me, driving Houston in motorhomes! If my brother lived in Houston, Mitch, I'd send him a text message.

I learned to drive RED here in the Houston area and have to go 40 miles on 3 different freeways to get to and from the dealer for repair and service I don't like it, and there are areas I dread, but it is doable. However, I will only drive during non rush hour. I think you will be fine. Have your route well planed. Drive the speed you are comfortable with and ignore anyone that makes you feel anxious When you get parked we'll find some margaritas

when I posted that I was worried when I first decided it was going to be ME towing this 5th wheel
Evie said remember this you are bigger than they are!!! made me smile but I also remembered that when I needed to
change lanes and had to do it NOW signaled and started oozing over and the person behind waved me in...
not sure if this helps but it did me. That said I've still not made myself go through Vegas been around it but going to have to do it some day
maybe even this year!!
