Microwave/Convection oven..silly question

Postby Redwahine » Sat Oct 19, 2013 8:12 am

RED does not have a gas oven, just cooktop. There is a large microwave/convection oven. I have never used a convection oven before. However I have successfully baked a few things. On of the hardest things is to remember that when I grab something after convection cooking, it is HOT. Brain says, " things in micro are OK to grab". I have to reset that mindset to, " yeah, it looks like a microwave, but HOT, HOT, HOT".

You're not suppose to use metal in regular microwave oven. However, the interior of this micro/convection oven is stainless steel. It is OK to use metal baking pans when using the convection function.

Silly question. Is it OK to use metal containers when using the microwave function??

No question is silly, you know????? !! At first these questions went through my head too, I have the 1/2 time oven also, which helps make it a little more confusing :) I read the directions fully for all uses, and so far, mind has remembered what function I am doing :D 3 in one is good, as long as you remember what you're doing

NO----- TO METAL IN MICRO function,

In my mobile home I have an Advantium over it is both microwave (no metal) and regular oven (use any oven safe pan or dish)... when using the microwave there is a glass turntable when using the oven part there is a metal pan to use on the turntable...

You will get used to it and it will be second nature...

In my motor home I have a microwave but also have an oven below my cook stove...

These new fangled gadgets are made to confuse the dickens out of us...

I think I'd just have to wear oven mitts all the time. That's the sort of thing my brain just doesn't remember. I have enough trouble keeping up with the name changes on tools!

My microwave/convection oven has a rack to use when using the convection. I think my turntable is metal so guess you can put pans on it too. Convection cooking takes a little getting use to. I find it slower and the oven gets so hot being in a cabinet. I would be more likely to use it in the winter than the summer. I am suppose to be able to broil in mine but that doesn't work too well.

Don't worry, I wondered the same thing. I think I would get confused about which method I was using each time. Would need to put a post-it on it (microwave or convection) to remind me!

I would also worry about the heat from the convection oven if it was build into the cabinet.

I have been wondering the same things...I have a microwave/convection oven with a glass turntable. Do I take the glass turntable out when using it as convection? Can I use a metal pan with the convection function? There is a small rack - do I use that with the convection function even though it's not low but tall? There is nothing in the manual that answers these questions. Lots of info about the microwave but just says to push convection button when using that function.

Judi, does your manual have any recipes for convection cooking that would tell you how to set the oven? My manual has pretty good instructions but I have to read them every time I want to use the convection. I had a convection oven probably 25 years ago and it had a while pyrex looking plate in it. That was before they had turntables. I would think you could cook with the turntable in it.

Martha, what brand is your oven?
I believe I have my manual somewhere, if we have the same brand.

I have a Sharp Carousel Grill 2 and I still have the manual. It is 12 years old and still working so shows how much I cook in it. ;)

The manual to mine has no recipes at all. It's a typical RV micro/convec. I tried calling the manufacturer but the phone number in the manual and on the internet is not correct. I haven't used the convection function since I got the new Roadtrek a few months ago. I don't want to blow up the darn thing!

You can find manuals online. I use both functions on mine and it works great.
