Drilled screws through the body of the rig

Drilled screws through the body of the rig

Postby Olive600 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 5:37 pm

I think Mitch has some experience with this.

I just noticed that three screws have been drilled through the body of the rig. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should go about getting this fixed and just how big a deal it really is? I'm seeing dollar signs.

Just one more delay to getting on the road.

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hope this isn't serious if they do not leak but just in case, I have one word....crap.

..
I got some special caulk from my dealer (I honestly can't remember what it was, but it was more than just bath/kitchen caulk you buy at Lowe's) and then my Tech Guy (the one that was here at the house last Wednesday) made me two little matching teardrop stickers out of vinyl and put one over the patched drill hole (finely sanded to be smooth) and another on the other side for continuity...

But you know someone with a digital cutter and some vinyl...you can have "custom" vinyl patches made, NO CHARGE!

After getting over the horror of what I had done, it was really no big deal.

Crap is right. My fix-it guy says that where they work they just fill the holes with silicone; it's water tight and a longterm fix. I'll ask my RV guy tomorrow.

Mitch, are you saying that IF I know someone with a digital cutter or are you hinting that I know someone with a digital cutter. If I know someone with a digital cutter, who is it? You?
I'm glad to pay if it isn't much. I have no more $ to put into this thing for a while. But I can pay whatever it costs you and postage. I suppose I can get the caulk from my RV guy.

Good to know it ain't a big deal. Whew! Another bullet dodged!

Just saw that Dicor is the brand name. Thanks!

Caulking used on a body repair may not be the same Dicor we use on other areas - so check on that. I would think it would be different. I know I was told a different one for one body area I need to caulk and couldn't get it in AK, and now can't find the paper with what it's called on it

The "someone" you know with a digital cutter is me. Cost is zero, depending on what color you need and how big the stencil needs to be. I have red in LONG rolls, but not very experienced with LONG cuts. And then I have various colors in smaller sheets - like 6" x 12"...

Mitch, thank you. I'll pm you with questions and details.

Beth, I'll ask my RV guy what kind of caulk I need. I'll post everything I learn.

Eternabond http://www.bestmaterials.com/roof-repair-tape-481.html is great for patching roofs and such. Truckers call it 100 mph tape and use it to patch roofs. They also make a caulk that is highly recommended on rv.net board.

If the body is fiberglass laminate a body shop or boat repair shop should be able to fill and seal so it looks new again as well as keeping the water out.

welcome to the club. When I first got my Class C I was putting up a shelf near the bed and drilled right through the wall. Next morning when I came out there were the damn screws sticking out. Removed long screws, replaced with shorter screws and patched with some kind of caulking. Sorry don't remember what it was. You could see where I patched it for the entire time I had the rig.

Karen, you make me laugh, and that's very welcome right now. I do feel like I've joined a club. Thank you everyone for all the responses.

Melissa, I'll ask my RV guy about Eternabond. I just want to get this fixed before the weekend. I still hope to hit the road on Sunday for a mini GTG with Karen.

Nikki, Eternabond is ONLY for the roof - it's made for the rubber roof. Not saying they don't make other kinds, but they have a particular one just for the rv rubber roof.

Thanks everyone for all the responses. I talked to my RV guy and he says that for these small holes just plain old silicone caulk will work fine. Mitch will cut me some patches and Bob's your uncle. Very little sleep last night. Could have been the chocolate and wine. Whaddya think?

Should have holes plugged this evening. Easy peasy.
