Tires for a Class C

Do you gals buy the specific tires made for RV's or do you just go with the tires that are light truck and rated for your RV (mine being E). Brought the RV (Chinook 24' Destiny class C) to 2 different tire stores that both install RV tires and both recommended the Michelin LTX MS 10 ply. I have looked online at the Michelin RV specific tires, but they are considerably more expensive. I guess considering that tires don't stay on the RV more that 5-8 yrs. don't know if paying that much more would be worth it. Thanks for the input.

What a timely post. Michelin is having dry rot problems with their tires. When I bought my used rig 3 years ago, it had brand new Michelins, the exact model you mentioned. They were new because the previous set developed dry rot.

Yesterday, while going 70 mph down a two lane highway in TX, my right rear outside tire lost its tread. The tread also did damage to my rig both in front and behind the wheel well. Today I am sitting near Dallas waiting for six new tires. All of my tires have evidence of dry rot. Michelin warranties its tires for 6 years but they try very hard to void the warranty. The dealership told them there is no evidence of puncture but I will need to ship the bad tire to them for inspection. If they agree that the tire failed, they will reimburse me for that tire, the shipping and the damage to my rig. In the meantime, as "good will", they told the dealer to sell me 5 tires at a 70% discount.

Even my spare, which has never been on the road, had evidence of dry rot. It only rode on the back of my rig covered up by a plastic tire cover fot the past three years.

If I didn't already have an investment with these tires, I would buy Bridgestones.

Pam, I have always gotten my tires at A&A Tire near Ingram. I buy what they recommend.

OMG Joan! I am shocked because Michelin has always had such a good reputation. Both of the tire places recommended that tire when I told them I was planning on traveling to Alaska this summer. Well back to the drawing board I guess. That is really scary and I am so glad you weren't hurt or had a really bad accident in your rig. When you say they have been "having a dry rot problem" has this been publicized? Are you going with Bridgestone's or is Michelin paying to put the same tire back on?

I Googled "tire rot Michelin" and found a post on 192 reviews on their tires by consumer review. The posts were all recent and it was all the same issue....dry rotting on the tires which were not that old and poor service from Michelin. Glad I put this question out to you gals cause I was going to have the things installed in a week or so. This forum is so awesome!

Pam, I called the guy in FL where I bought my rig. They also have a service garage. He told me about the Michelin problem and urged me to push Michelin for compensation. They were telling me to drive home, ship the tire and then they would get back to me. I insisted that the tires were unsafe and I could not drive on them. I kept asking him if that is what he expected me to do? Drive on bad tires. He finally relented and authorized the discount.

I wouldn't get Michelin based on the tire guys my last two sets of tires. I went with their recommendation last time and love my Commercial Goodyear tires - which were also recommended to Tina and another friend of mine - all of us doing good with them. I'm not sure that I'd want to get the replacement Michelin's with the bad rap they have ... I'd go for trying to get money from them and getting a different brand of tire, personally.

Joan, every post I read, on that consumer review site, indicated just about everyone having to push for compensation. Just exactly what you said. I am going to look at Bridgestones. Been reading some posts on the iRV2 forum and someone had very good things to say about them. Another person also mentioned Toyo.

I usually put the Goodyear RV tires on my Class C. They are such a pain in the behind to get around here that I let them put the E-10 ply regular Goodyear truck tires. I just had to replace them recently because they had cupping(uneven wear) and they were less than 4 years old with about 15,000 miles on them. I replaced them with RV tires. I won't be putting truck tires again if I can help it.

I don't know why the dealer doesn't want to order them. I can get them shipped and get them in a week. The last time I ask the dealer to order them I waited over a month and finally told them to forget it. If I order them I have to pay shipping and to have them mounted. I went to a different dealer for my last tires. We'll see how it goes with them.

There is a difference between truck tires and commercial truck tires. My tires are rated for heavier loads than my rv. But your place would probably have to order these, too, Martha.

I just bought Michelin tires for my class C RV. Was very, very satisfied with the previous tires also from Michelin. Sent in for the $70 rebate... never heard a word from them. Very disappointed. Only hope these 'new' tires are worth the price & don't have the 'rot' problem... they were VERY expensive ... Have heard that Toyo are very good tires...
