I Have Been Truly Initiated...

Postby Sandersmr » Mon Sep 23, 2013 2:03 pm

And it only took 3 years. I had a blowout on the trailer last Thursday. Coming out of a small east Texas town on Hwy 19 and a truck whips around me (it's 2 lane at this point). They flash their lights and point as they pull on to the shoulder. I almost didn't stop but there was enough traffic, I felt safe enough. As I pull off the shoulder, I see the smoke coming from the driver's side of the trailer. And when I got out to look, the side wall fell off the rim.

The 2 young men got out and asked if I had a spare and where was the best place to jack the trailer - I didn't really know since I hadn't had to do it before - and proceeded to fight getting the old tire off and the spare on. They sat in the 95° temps on the side of the road for over an hour wrestling that thing. The tread had completely wrapped itself around the axle and caught in the brake pads. The had to use the truck's bottle jack under the frame to get everything high enough that they could slip the scissors jack under the leaf spring before being able to get the spare on.

And they refused any money from me!!!! I had given them bottles of water about half way through and told them to go at least get themselves something cold to drink, but they wouldn't take anything.

Oh, and the tire took out the wiring harness to the electric brakes. Ouch!

Gosh, Maggie - I'm sure glad you weren't hurt!
What a sick feeling you must have had.

Their folks raised those two young men right...

Ouch! Bad one! There are truly good people in this world no matter what the naysayers preach about how the country is going to go down the tubes with the new generation. Karen and I had a couple change a flat on my jeep in Charleston. They saw the 2 old widders working on it and jumped in to help. Wouldn't take no for an answer or any money.

I sent a note to their employers. It's a small family owned business and I have a feeling one of them is the grandson of the owner. I just wanted them to know it was so very much appreciated.

So glad to hear you are okay. The young people who do the right thing get so little publicity in comparison to those who don't. A note to their employer was a great idea on your part. Hope you can get the auxillary damage repaired quickly and easily too.

So glad you are safe and while the damage is no fun, could have been lots worse. And a big thanks to those young men who not only got you off the road before it got worse, but stayed and took care of you.

what a happy note for a bad situation. Flat tires are never any fun but so glad you ended up with help and so sorry for the damage.

Thankful two nice young men helped and stayed until you were back on the road. Could you feel the trailer handling any differently when the blow out happened? It is reassuring to know there are good people out there who help others when needed.

Glad that you are safe and the damage manageable. The silver lining of finding good in the world is nice also.
