Alaska 2014

I am wanting to visit Alaska in my RV next summer. I would like to know if anyone is planning to travel there then as well. Any suggestions for budgeting, route, etc. would be appreciated.

Purchase the latest edition of Church's Alaska book. :D They update every couple of years. It was definitely helpful at listing available stops along all the major highways. You also don't have to wade through pages of advertisements. Think about where you want to go and visit in Canada.....the Canadian Rockies are beautiful. And give yourself plenty of time to wander down the highways. When we went, the only reservations we made ahead were for Denali the week of July 4th, because it was the holiday weekend and a major national park. The rest of the time we found room at the campgrounds when we wanted and found plenty of boondocking along the rivers and roads.....

My cousins are trekking thru Alaska now. They are posting the most beautiful photos of wildlife, vistas and the tundras decked out in a riot of fall colors. They were just in Denali. No crowds in the fall.

I spent last summer in Alaska and may go back for a portion of next summer.

Definitely, Church's book as Tina suggested.

We boondocked most of the time.

If you go to www.gasbuddy.com, you can follow current fuel prices to give you an idea.

Extra expenses depend on what you want to see and do. You can usually find those costs online as well.

Verizon Mi-Fi generally doesn't work in Alaska - it is an AT&T state.

Have fun planning!!

Thanks for the feedback. How late can you stay into Sept. before it starts to freeze? Anyone know? Has anyone taken the ferry through the inside passage then gotten on land for the rest of their travel

We only took the ferry from Skagway to Prince Rupert coming back.

I had to be back in Washington State for a wedding so we left Alaska toward the end of August.

My forest trip I got on the ferry in Haines and got off in three cities of the inside passage for a few days each to explore. To me that was the only reason is the only reason totake the ferry unless they dropped prices.

Most of Alaska starts shutting down with labor day weekend. But there no reason to rush back like I did this year, cuz I have places to be. Relax and enjoy. Year before last some of the passes got snow the Thursday after labor day. No one expects it to last, but it is Alaska. This year there was snow almost right up to memorial day.
