Air Conditioner died

I do not usually go back to my rig on work days, but something made me go today thank goodness. The temps were up to 90 and Maggie was frantic. The ac was blowing hot air. Shut it off, called mobile repair and took my little "hot dog" back to the office with me.

Apparently my compressor is seized. No obvious reason but will cost approx $1000 to replace the unit. Hope they can do it by tomorrow. Meantime we are sitting outside hoping it cools off enough tonight to sleep. What a rotten surprise.

Two summers ago I was in Wyoming during the summer when it was blazing hot. Problem was, it was cloudy and hot. My AC got funky on me and started blowing hot air, too. Fortunately there was a top-notch RV mechanic there who said that sometimes the compressor quits or freezes up when it's cloudy and hot. Apparently they need the sun to help keep things liquid. He had me shut it off for 30 min. or so and then try it again, but at a higher setting -- not much, but enough to help it cycle off and on more often. Did the trick, and I didn't have any more trouble with it again. So whenever it's cloudy and hot I remember to set it a little higher.

Have you tried it since calling the repair guy?

I shut it down when I discovered the problem. When they arrived about an hour later, we started it up but the comoressor didn't go on. They said it was drawing 42 amps and was seized.

after they left I called my guy in FL and he concurred after hearing what they told me. Have never had a moment of trouble with it in past 3 years. Such is life. Things could be worse.

Hate typing on my phone. Too many errors. Must have fat fingers.

When the AC died on me it was running but not blowing cold air. My mechanic said I may have been running it with not enough electric power so it "browned" out. Do you monitor the voltage coming into your rig? A lot of RV parks have bad electric posts, many with not enough power.

We suspect a power surge. The lights went out in the office just after a construction guy turned on his welder. He flipped the breaker and was back in business. I asked another workamper if his rig was affected and he said no. We usually have 119 coming in ( i have a voltage reader) but you are right. It could have been the power.

Do you have a surge protector for your entire rig? They are about $290 for a 30 amp one. You plug your RV into the surge protector and the protector into the electric box. I wouldn't be without one. When I was workkamping we had a lightening strike the power pole. The lights went out and came back on BUT a big Class A without a surge protector lost all his electronics in his rig. They guy next to him WITH a surge protector lost his protector - burhned it right up but everything in ihis rig was fine. For about a week after the lightening hit we didn't have full power at the boxes. The owner kept saying there was no problem but my voltage meter kept showing me only about 103 to 105 voltage coming in. I would unplug from the box and run the generator for the AC to keep the puppies cool while I was working. Am pretty sure this was what did my AC in cause it died when I got home.

Joan, I highly recommend a power management system.

I had a 50 amp in the 5er and have a 30 amp in the camper. It will shut down your electrical connection if there is an open ground, a power surge, not enough power, etc. It can be portable or hardwired (which I prefer).

This is company is highly recommended by members of the RV.net forum. If there is a problem of any type with the unit, they will repair or replace it.

Karen I do not have a surge protector but after reading something recently on this forum, was going to get one. Would have ordered from Amazon but thought I was leaving next week. Today the manager asked me to stay longer. Will order now.

If you get a portable surge protector you might want to get a lock for it so it does not walk off.

When I bought my surge Protector, I also bought one of those lock boxes that covers the part where the plugs connect. I decided not to use it because my electrical cord unplugs from the RV. I'd rather have to replace the Surge Protector than the 50A power cord.

Anita, they told me they don't sell direct. Where did you purchase and if it is hardwired, what is the location since I thought it went into the electrical box then to the rig.

I have one of those Progressive mgmnt systems. I bought it and the RV shop installed it for me. I had it hard wired in, it is located right next to my converter.
