I had to look her up...

Diana Nyad (born August 22, 1949) is an American author, journalist, motivational speaker, lesbian, and world record long-distance swimmer, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage or swim fins, swimming from Havana to Key West at age 64. Nyad was once ranked 30th among U.S. women squash players.

What an inspiration!

Hooray for her! When I first heard her name I thought, "no way"! I remember her very first attempt.

She is one tough lady. Gives you hope, doesn't it?

We were glued to the pc monitor watching the ten miles to shore. We didn't get to see Diana climb out of the water because the photographer was filming from a balcony and the view was blocked by trees. Local news was showing a golf game. Huh? What's with that? The news stations finally got around to showing photos. It was just so disappointing to not have more live coverage available as something this major was happening. She set other records during the swim and finished earlier and stronger than expected. Awesome for anyone, but especially sweet that she is over 60!

I have followed Diana's swimming conquests for years. I used to be a "ocean swimmer" but the longest swim I did was 5 miles. I did come in first tho....many years ago. Florence Chadwick was my coach for awhile before she went to England to swim the English channel. I have to really give Diana a big cheer to her stick to it ness. What a gal!!! lyn

Lyn - only 5 miles?! That is incredible! I couldn't do 100 ft.

I was raised in Mission Beach so spent all my time either in the bay or the ocean. I thought I was a pretty good body surfer until I went to Hawaii and got flipped, tossed and pounded into the sand! lyn

She is my hero. At 64 -- despite numerous failures -- she continued to believe in her ability to swim from Cuba to the U.S. shore. A wonderful example for us all.
