Great Pictures as usual Liz. Yes, you were correct in that the one ship going through the locks was going to haul iron. Those ships with the round Algoma Railway decal on the bow are owned by the Algoma Central Railway. They haul iron ore to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to the Algoma Steel mill there. Most of the ships or "lakers" as they are called, are 1000 feet long. It's one of the reasons there is going to be new construction at the locks, to accommodate them. With these new ships, there are lees on the lakes now than before. Used to be a lot more ships on the lakes back in the early years, but now it's more like 80 or 90. It was great that you managed to catch some in the locks as sometimes nothing is going on.

Thanks Liz. Nice tour. The Michigan Lakes are so huge, when I was there thought they almost looked like oceans.
