Why wouldn't a nurse volunteer to use something like that? I'm thinking of poor George when they were trying to get needles into him - vein(s) kept rolling (I think that was the term). They stuck him and stuck him and stuck him. Why didn't they use that thing?

The lab techs & nurses use them on me for blood draws only.....not on IVs... Seems they need the slightly larger ones to be able to thread the IV cath. into the vein...that's what hurts. It all boils down to how "experienced" the person is in doing the stick and how good the veins are.....the top of the hand hurts a little more cause there's not much muscle there ...just skin, bones, veins, tendons, mostly.... When the PEDS. butterfly is use on me in the elbow, it also doesn't hurt as much...Disclaimer here, I'm not a medical professional, just know this stuff from experience and asking lots of questions....

Not being a nurse I can't say this for sure but think in my mind that the reason
it hurts more is the area a more sensitive area perhaps...I just know that for
me that area hurts more than the inner elbow..but when they can't get it in the first
couple times then I grit and bear it

I prefer the one "ouch" with the butterfly to the multiple sticks and digging for my shy veins. We cannot use a butterfly for IV's as you cannot infuse fluids very fast as they are such a small gauge. Also we dont use those on our neonates as they are a needle, there is no catheter to thread. We have very teeny tiny IV catheters tho for infant IV's.

My favorite line from my patients is "I am afraid of needles", and they are covered in big ugly tattoo's...and piercings in some funny places. Hmmmmm just dont get it.

I know that story all too well! Health Services will call my office and tell me to send one of the inmates up to for a TB shot ( yes, that one with the itsy bitsy tiny needle!) and a inmate who is completely covered with tats and piercings will immediately start whining that they are afraid of needles. Just about have to slap them upside the head and drop kick them out of the door. I will go on record saying that I despise tattoos because of working in the prison and knowing what some of them signify. Several years ago there was a doctor who came in one day a week and volunteered to use his laser equipment to remove gang related tattoos from inmates. Several of my workers took advantage of it because they did want a fresh start when they were released.
