micro chip

Postby snowball » Wed Aug 28, 2013 10:41 pm

Ok when I got Shadow they told me he came with a micro chip and that I needed to have it put into my name
for a small fee...so far haven't chiefly because I wasn't sure what addy to put on it...My SD address one of my kids
or what. So what do you full timers that have a micro chip in your pet do? Right now it would send him back to
the shelter in Vegas ...that wouldn't help at all

Doesn't the chip just get the finder in touch with you? I know I have my FL address on Maggie's.

Well, that reminds me that mine has an old address... but my phone # is the same, and I think that's what is important. I would have to put my SD address, if I changed it.

We have our friend, Cathy, in GA, listed as a contact along with our PA address and our cell number on Spinner's chip....

Most important thing is my cell phone number. When I traveled I used luggage tags, the ones with the paper insert, on my dogs collars with the address of the RV park I was currently in and my cell number. I could change the little inserts easily when I changed locations.

Even when I lived in a house - only had a phone number on the dog's tags - sometimes two (as I would sometimes also have my sister's # put on, also when we lived close).

I like the tag idea for each RV park as first defense. Second defense is phone number on the collar. Tyler has a glow in the dark collar that has his name and my cell number on it along with a tag on each of his choke collars.

In my mind, the 3rd defense is the chip, because you have to find someone that has a scanner. Then based on the number sequence, which agency would have the contact info (and if its up to date!) Tyler's vet just found a seconded chip in His neck, apparently one from the breeder when he was a puppy and then one for the ag clearance for bringing him to Hawaii without quarantine. I use the program called Home Again. Both of the chips are registered with them. The most important is you phone number. You may list more than one contact. You also have an online profile that you can change as you travel. I think this is important in case something happens to you. The animal agency will be able to find contacts to help you and/or your pet if you are incapacitated in any way.

I like the idea of the luggage tags with the campground information. If we have a barn cat that likes to travel I put our phone number on a white flea collar with a laundry marker. I don't like to put hanging tags on a cat because they climb and can get the tag hung on things. When we had a lot of people coming to the house with horse trailers we had several cats take a trip and I had to go get them. I use the flat tags that rivet to the collar for a dog. You have to watch the hanging tags, they will wear through what they are attached with.

I am not a full-timer BUT just in case something would happen while I was on the road and the dogs are with me .. there is an emergency contact of friends listed with Home Again as well. Serves two purposes .. if I am in trouble and unable to call them, the instant they get a call from Home Again about my dogs .. they'll come running to find out!!
