One thing to remember - these units are not well insulated. So you aren't going to get a large differential like you would in a house - even with covering the windows and stuff. Make sure you vent just a little to let the hot air escape and keep a fan going to circulate the air - both of those will help. But unless you have a 4-season trailer, I don't think you will get 20 degrees differential, close maybe.

Noted: the next unit I get...believe me...after this experience, it's going be a 4-season unit.

I thought venting a little would help but it had the opposite effect in my rig. Much cooler if everything is closed tight, windows covered all around. Dark, but cooler.

I can't vent if I want the ac to work well, either. And my rig would hold pretty steady at 80 when it was above 100 and humid. I was happy with that. And didn't cost me an arm and leg. I probably could have brought it down more, but was happy with that temp during the day.

I know it's been a couple of weeks but thought I would add my two cents on the hot weather and rv's. On June 27 this year hubby was admitted to UC Davis hospital for major surgery. The night before he and our son got me set up at the Kiwanis house a few blocks away on the hospital grounds. Basically the RV spot is a gravel parking area with full hookups. I set the AC thermostat daily for 85 degrees wanting to keep it from getting way too hot but not wanting to overtax the AC since I had not used the rv in such conditions before. Turned out that week was the hottest of the year and the hottest in a few years with no day under 100 the entire 8 days. At least three days wer over 110. Off I went each morning on the shuttle to be with hubby until around 10 p.m. Each night. I came home each night to the rv at 85 as set and never had a problem. I was so thankful It did fine. I felt the AC helped the fridge not to work so hard (it was on 110 power). I usually have a thermometer probe in the fridge as we usually do but forgot batteries and the food did ok and frozen stayed frozen the whole time. I did put the reflective cover over front window and the side front facing south. It was my first experience being alone in the van and it was cozy and nice even though I was stressed over hubby. A week or two after I left there a woman was sexually assaulted in that same parking lot at night. I was aware it was lonely out there so asked the police who brought me home each night to wait until I was in the vehicle. I was the only rv there all week and it is behind the big motel like house and not visible from inside so I was careful. But cooling wise it went well. It was also my first time to totally do the whole break camp, dump, and stow all hoses etc myself and I did fine on that too so know I could do a gtg sometime if I can get hubby healthy enough.

Wow, all this talk about AC units and horrid heat have convinced me, more than ever, that I love camping in climates where temps over 100 are a rarity. I think I have had to use my AC only two or three times ever, and this summer when it got to about 110 for a few hours was one of them. I turned it on to test it and so I could safely leave the dogs in here while I went shopping.

I usually don't mind any heat up to about 100, although I rarely experience heat above 80 to 85 deg. F. no matter where I am. However, the dogs do like it cooler. My AC cooled it off so much in here that I froze when I came in to check it! Had to turn it down.

I will stick to my living up here in the north during the summers, and down in the south during the winters.....nice, even temps most of the time! I do need to get my Honda generator companion and the joiner-kit so I could run my AC while boondocking if I had to. My Honda 2000 alone won't do it. That will be my next big expense, in case I wish to travel farther and into hotter climates.
