Here's a link you can start with.

The generator repair guy I totally trusted in a small engine repair shop told me it was all hype and not to waste my money.

Yep. And without the nasty testosterone you might find elsewhere with this discussion.

Beth, definitely going to get generator working. I do suspect gunk in a line and from what I read, the Seafoam should clean it out. Never had problem with it before but it sat for months after my surgery and then I was traveling and plum forgot about it.

Mitch: I don't understand; are you pouring the Seafoam on the "parts" to cleans them? What are you doing with it, exactly?

Beth: On Sta-Bil: "Ethanol-blended fuels left untreated can start “phasing.” Phase separation is when ethanol in the fuel absorbs too much water, and separates from gasoline by dropping to the bottom of the tank since the ethanol and water mixture that results from phase separation is heavier than gasoline. Water-ethanol solutions can damage fuel systems and engines, and the system will need to get flushed to prevent further damage. Once phase separation has occurred, no additive can reverse it, and the fuel tank will require draining. If the fuel and ethanol have completely phase-separated, the fuel in the tank will be unusable and must be drained. Mechanics offer ‘pump-out’ services to drain and flush the fuel system. - See more at: http://coolridesonline.net/news-blog/ho ... 5FR2n.dpuf""

..I'm putting it in the gas tanks. I have forgotten to start the 4-wheeler for a while. This morning, started on the first press! I have fallen in love with non-ethanol gas.

I also just read an article that says it's not a good thing to drain (or run out) the fuel for winter storage. Allows moisture to build up. And some other things I can't remember. They recommended putting in fresh gas, adding your SeaFoam (or was it Sta-Bil?) and letting the engine run for a couple of minutes to get the "stuff" distributed throughout the entire fuel system. That's my plan for the winter.

Can't find the "don't drain your tank" article (darn!), but this one was interesting (after his initial first paragraph rant was over! :)

Yes, the manual that came with my John Deere said to always keep the tank full over the winter. It also has a system in place that when you turn it off, it runs till the fuel is out of the lines.

With our toyhauler having an on board geny and fuel filling station, I try to rotate the fuel. I use the pump to fill up the mower and put fresh fuel and stabilizer back in the geny tank.

And this
http://www.fuel-testers.com/review_gas_ ... ducts.html[/quote]

At the end of this article it says to "Replace" fuel "Often." Therein lies the problem; we, who do not move our MHs but 2 - 4 times per year are not able to do this. Thus, these fuel-additive companies obviously see a money-making opportunity. Also, I noticed that the "proprietary" formula of the Sta-Bil contains mineral oil, which is I'm sure the "active" ingredient. So what does that mean...that we can just a little mineral oil once and a while? Ha!

However, I did some research on gas a few years ago, and it has been tested/proven that the gasoline from certain companies such as BP (QT, Costco), Chevron, and Shell are considered "stable" because they always come from their own refineries. Gas from grocery stores, AM PM, Circle K, and non-branded places get whatever's available at the time the tankers are needed to come out. It's potluck in other words.

Also, it has been proven that the detergents in gas from Chevron is the only brand out there that actually does do what it claims. Shell runs a close second. So, that tells me that if they're using the same detergents (yet to be determined, but I'll find out someday ;) ) in fuel stabilizers...they are doing something beneficial to the fuel; thus also to the engines running them.

In fact whenever the gas prices dip...I fill up at Chevron for that purpose, and I never buy gas at AM PM (already known to us grease-monkey families to be the "engine-killing" gas because of the "extra" water in it).

Anyway...when in doubt...or having a disagreement :) just research it.

Yeah, a lot of us can't choose non-ethonal gas...and it's just going to get harder to do in the future!

Around here, the Conoco stations are ethanol-free...and proudly advertise it because of all the problems people have had with their boat motors, ATV's, etc.

My brother (western suburbs of Chicago) can't buy non-ethanol, either. So, for his 2 small gas engines, he buys aviation fuel. It's quite pricey, but he doesn't use that much.

Here's a map of non-ethanol gas locations...

Obviously a hot topic with every view in the world if you read it all. Everyone has to read and decide for themselves what is best to do - and then we can all agree to disagree :)

Having worked in the oil industry for a while (I'm mostly petrochemical/chemical) and being the chemist that I am...

It's true that the ethanol will absorb water and will phase out - causing gunk in the bottom of the tank.

All brands of gasoline (with the exception of BP Ultimate) are considered fungible, or totally interchangeable - until they add their special detergents/additives usually at the terminal. You might find it strange that your Exxon gas may have come from Shell, etc - until it gets to the final terminal and they add the Exxon detergents. The only reason I say that BP Ultimate is not fungible is that it goes through an extra distillation step to remove some of the heavy impurities. That's why it appears water white compared to most gasolines' yellow-white.

My son said to use Ethanol free gasoline in MH. One of the Phillips Petroleum stations in Bartlesville, OK is now selling only Ethanol free gas. Many truck stops sell it as well. I have been having the same generator problems that others posts mentioned. Ethanol gasoline may be hard to buy in cities.

I hope this helps, will let you know if this makes a difference.

The trouble is that ethanol-free gas is not available in some places. Or that it's way out of the way, or too costly for others.
