Suggestions Needed

Postby taburgh » Fri Aug 09, 2013 12:15 pm

Presently am boon docked in a motel for several days waiting for a new axel. Fortunately am with my mother in beautiful Ft. Collins, CO. We've had a very nice week+ on an extended vacation. We're ready to go home, however. Here's my need for input:

1) bought my Heartland 2013 MPG in Oct of 2012. It was "used" so didn't get a manufactures warranty. Now I fear I should have purchased a dealer warranty. Anywho. . . .

2) travelled a short distance last Oct on 3 day trip. No problem

3) my second trip with camper began July 15. Travelled some 2,000 miles until a breaking apparently froze in right tire. Was in WY wilderness (Custer SD to Ft. CoLlins) when the tire began to give. Many fortunate and Devine events got me safely to help.

4) the loose tire/bearring give-way torqued the axel as I drove for some 100 miles to help.

5) question: is anyone but me responsible for "dry or frozen" when'll bearings on a relatively new camper? Dealer? Manufacturer? I called the dealer but received no response. Will keep trying. Will also contact manufacturer when I get home. I drove some 70 miles days before this happened on a washboard road in WI feeling like it was certainly creating a problem. (if only sending everything in the camper every which way).

Any thoughts, similar experience, suggestions? Thanks. Tamara

My first thought is you need roadside assistance and never continue driving with a problem. The roadside assistance is wonderful and they would have gotten you and your tt in without further damage.

What you're describing might not have been covered by a warranty, except the original one. Good luck.

Correction: its a 2011 not 2013

Hey, beth. I have roadside and they paid for towing. In hindsight i see the problem arose many many miles before i stopped. There was oil on the wheel cover that i attributed to all the road construction i encountered. The sway in the trailer i attributed to high winds. I couldn't see the tire wobble on right tire in my mirror. Thankful for the truck driver who waved me to the side of the road.

Hint: if your insurance cant find a tow, call state police (911) who have connections and will find the guy to do the job.

Still wondering if the RV dealer who sold me the RV is somehow responsible. If selling me a TT less than a year ago should have serviced the TT to the max.

I wonder why such a new trailer was traded back in and resold??? Could there have been something wrong with it then?

Do they have a Carfax for RVs? It would be interesting to know if it had been in an accident and if the previous owners had had a bunch of trouble and got rid of it for that reason.

It seems they should have sold it with at least a 90 day warranty or something.

Regarding the CarFax for TT & MH's ... I've asked in my travels to look and I've gotten "No" for an answer. But if someone know of something similar, under maybe a different name, I'd be interested as well.

Sorry for the delay in responding to suggestions. Finally am home again and am cleaning up the camper. Re the axle, I am just accepting it as one of those things that happened. Lesson learned. I will keep a regular maintainance schedule which will include repacking the bearings every two years. Am beginning to see the advantage of a four tire/double axel rig over the two tire/single axel.

Wicked: not a good Sam member but think I need to -- had it my first year of camping, let it expire second year due to mom's illness and distraction, then took off on this trip without thinking about it.

Another question: my LP alarm goes off when the TT is disconnected to a power source. I know it's not an LP leak. Can these alarms be reset or is it replacement time? I'm ready to put the camper back in storage and I know when I disconnect the battery, the alarm will whine continuously -- probably until it just uses up whatever power it has built up within the device (?).

My LP alarm was Low Power, when my batteries
were failing, I disconnected it so it didn't keep
waking me up at night with its chirping. I have yet
to replace the batteries, but that chore is on the list.

When you disconnect from a 120vac power source you LP leak detector will run on your battery power. If that battery power is low the LP leak detector will go into the alarm mode. The LP detector does not have any power "built up in it". When you go to store your rv the leak detector will start alarming when the battery starts to get low and it will continue to alarm until it runs your battery down to nothing. So......turn the LP leak detector off before you store your rv.
