Grand-daughter's First Rodeo

Postby AlmostThere » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:50 am

Last weekend was my 13 yr old GDs first rodeo. She entered 4 events: Key pole, figure 8 poles, pole bending and barrel racing.
She took 2nd in the pole bending! I've stolen a pic from the professional photographer of her doing the figure 8. Shhhhhh!

This is the next day, getting ready for the parade. Passion was dressed like a pig (the theme for the parade was "squealing" into summer or some such.
I didn't get a shot of the curly pig tail pinned in back. It was cute. They received a 1st place trophy in the single horse division.

Great pictures! I love seeing kids on horses....I am afraid of them! Probably because I was raised at the beach. lyn

She only started learning the poles and barrels 6 wks ago so we are truly amazed at how quickly she picked it up. Also wanted to mention that Passion, her horse, is borrowed from a high school friend, and is 24 yrs old!

Congrats to your GD for the 2nd place at pole bending....that's a tough one to compete in....love Passion's costume for the parade....

The 4H Club here in north-central PA has a large horse group....my youngest sister competed quite alot.....I was always more nervous than she was at the fair...and I was just watching.....But it was always lots of fun..... ;) :D

That is awesome! Only 6 weeks of practice and on a borrowed older horse too! She must be very confident on a horse. I used to ride English and did a lot of jumping competitions. I loved it! I used school horses and still managed to beat the girls who had their own horses. Confidence is a big factor tho, because the horse can sense it.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

I was going to say that the horse must be very calm to be in that outfit in a parade but if he's 24 he's probably seen it all. That's the kind of things I did in high school. I was pretty fearless. My dad never attended anything we did and my mother was clueless about how dangerous some of the things we did were. I did things I would never have let my kids do.

It's good to see girls still involved in these activities. It's a lot of work but teaches them responsibility.

Ahhhhhh, love it. Takes me back to the days of our own horses and the gymkhanas. I had the truck and trailer and
hauled one of the neighbor kids too. It was always alot of fun.

My daughter completed in 4-H for a number of years...always on leased horses...usually someones retired quarter horse who wanted to support young riders. The nice part is often the animals were better than what she/we could have afforded outright to purchase, she had to work out the details of the lease (often it included working so many hours in the barn) and when she left for college....we didn't have to worry about what to do with a horse....

Good for her! I spent a lot of time at rodeos when my son was participating and I loved watching the pole bending and barrel racing but watching my son riding bulls...not so much!
