where are dogs ok?

Postby CricketSail » Tue Jul 02, 2013 7:33 am

Getting closer to the rv move every day, and starting to seriously plan my expenses and practicalities. I will be on a close budget, but wherever I go, my dogs go with me. In general, where are dogs ok when rving? Any suggestions about reasonably priced places, boondocking, where dogs are ok? Also, I am thinking of national parks since I am a NPS volunteer and have passes to get into any national park lands. But what about the dogs? Thanks.....

I've never found any place I couldn't take my dogs They always have to be on a leash which if you just want to sit outside with them, is annoying so I bought a folding fence for around $75 at Tractor Supply Most pet stores have them, too.. I also carry a small rug in case there isn't any grass. I won't stay at any private CG that has dogs running loose. Don't know about you but people who think the leash laws don't pertain to them, drive me nuts.

You can camp with dogs in most national parks but may not be allowed to take them hiking with you. Some state parks have pet loops and loops that allow no pets. Some private parks have breed specific bans usually do to their insurance company. Some have size or weight limits or limit the number of pets. Even when I traveled once with four dogs, I never had difficult finding a spot to rest. It just took more walking to get everyone happy..... :)

I have seen several places that haven't allowed the "fences" ... but those are mainly private cg's. I don't use them, so it doesn't matter. Most do not allow dogs left unattended outside. Some say not left unattended at all (like MI state parks - which, unfortunately for MI state parks, means I don't stay there). But, I have never had problems. Some do have size restrictions, etc. When boondocking - never seen any rules other than the leash requirement. I, too, never go anywhere without my dog (was dogs when I started out, and may again one day be dogs). Some places do have restrictions on the # of dogs, also.

Well that's very helpful to know that so many places allow pets. I have two small dogs, so that much shouldn't be a problem. It doesn't matter if it's leashes or pens, that is never enough for them, they need to go running - at least one of them does. But I can work this out with your suggestions once I get on the road. At least it sounds as if I can stop in most places, and work it out about the runs later. I have the same issue where I'm living now. The dogs are contained or leased at all times in town, but we find appropriate places to run at every opportunity.

More and more cities and towns are getting "dog parks". I never have had trouble with finding ways to exercise my dog while I traveled. So many RV'ers travel with dogs today. I don't believe you will have any problems. lyn

Peaches and I find places to walk everywhere - as she needs that. We were out 1 1/2 hours this morning. You'll not have trouble - unless you always need off-leash areas to run. Then you'll be doing a bit more searching, but, yes, they are out there.

Ava, thanks for posting this. The list is incomplete for my area, but you made me realize that I can research dog parks along my route so that Olive can get some vigorous exercise. She's used to running every evening. I'll have to find out how much regular walking she'll need when we can't find a place for her to run. You know, I've made international relocations that were simpler than RVing. Is it possible that a gal has to be just a little nuts to take this on? Going out for a long weekend is one thing. A longer trip or full timing is a whole different deal. Lots of work. Seems that way to me.
