Someone tried to steal my RV

Postby bfandlw » Mon Jul 01, 2013 5:44 pm

A couple of weeks ago we went to the RV storage lot, to put a few items inside and realized the drivers door on my RV was unlocked. I started looking around and I saw a side window had been broken to gain access to the sliding door. After the police arrived we went inside (holding my breath) to see what they took. The ignition was busted (with one of my screwdrivers) and the dash was scratched, but the tv,microwave,DVD player were there. Looks like about $3500.00 in damages and it will be covered by my insurance, but what a horrible feeling to know someone was in here. He ate and then used my bathroom, without flushing of course. We have moved to a different storage lot, but find myself worrying all the time. I know it could have been much worse....but this is my baby and I've only had it 9 months. I am trying to put this behind me and enjoy my travels this summer. We just got back from PA GTG yesterday and it helped using it for the weekend.
We will keep planning more trips and hopefully meet more of you...

Becky, so glad to hear you didn't let the break in and all the awful feelings that go with it stop you from going to the GTG. I know how it feels to have someone break into your home. All I can say is that you'll feel better in time. In the meantime, why don't you buy one of those clowns that you can punch? I think I'm going to get one of those. Yeah. That sounds like a real good idea. :D I'll meditate and be mellow after I beat the crap out of it.

Wow, Becky, that was smart to not go in there, not knowing if you would find them still in there! I'm glad there wasn't more damage or things stolen, just the creepy feeling when you think about somebody else in your space. Good thing y'all were able to drive it & go to the gtg & add good memories to your RV.

I too know that awful feeling (my former home was broken into and I had an ID theft problem).
Glad yours wasn't worse and that you still made the gtg.

I, too, know the feeling of having a home broken into. How sad that someone did that to your rv. I'm glad you moved it to a new place and hope the new storage lot is more secure.

That is real scary... now that I do not have Shadow I wonder about traveling... my daughter Jackie got me a thing that makes a lot of noise if someone tries to get in but if no on hears what good is that... does anyone have any ideas on how to keep your rig safe if you are not in it?

Kathleen, I think you are safe when you are living in it. They are much more likely to be broken into in a storage lot where there is no one around to watch.

I have been full-timing for a full year alone and without a dog. I feel much more safe than I did staying in hotels on business. No one has ever bothered me, and I have not seen any other RVs broken into. Sometimes I have stayed at campgrounds where there was no one around for several hundred feet and I still felt safe.

Most state and national parks have someone patrolling during the day and even during the nights. You also have lots of other campers around, even when you are out for the day, so your RV is likely to be safe.

When I got my very first RV about a year ago, the person teaching me all the details about it gave me some very good advice about keeping safe while traveling. These tips won't help when your RV is in storage but are easy to do when on the road. I most often travel alone, and was advised to get an old man's hat and put it on the dashboard. And never put out only one camp chair, but put out two and next to one place an old pair of men's boots and a "man-type: book - in other words not a sappy romance! Do anything that might make it look like there is a big strong man around. It sounds really sexist and un PC, but it's simple stuff. Having said all that, I have yet to follow the advice myself.......

Any place you stay more than a few hours will figure that out ... I sure do ... sorry to say that. But true.

I agree, Beth. In fact, I would say it takes people only a few minutes to figure out you are traveling alone when they see a woman driving in, hooking up, and moving around.

That doesn't mean I think being noticed as being alone makes you a target. I think the fact that most campers do a lot of people watching means that the area is safer, not more dangerous. A lot of snoopy neighbors is a good thing.

That is so scary! I feel for you! I don't think I would have been so calm, but what do we know what we'd do until it happens to us?
I'm glad it wasn't worse for you...that's for sure!
And here I've been having an ongoing argument w/ DH about securing my DD's, and my bikes on the back of my MH for our long trip in Sept....I want to use one (or more) of those heavy linked chains w/ one or more shackles, and he thinks I'm overreacting! He's not going to be with us on the trip, of course...just me and her, and out tiny dogs.

What did the storage place say...if anything about the theft?
