2004 Pace Arrow

Postby ACC » Tue May 28, 2013 4:14 pm

I'm still in the fact finding/homework/research stage of finding my new home.

I've decided on a motor home and have now driven one gas and one diesel. I'm thinking I'd love a 37' Pace Arrow and I like the new front rounded look starting in 2004 on the Pace Arrows.

My question is if I'm going to be full timing for 5 years or so and traveling some is the gas engine going to be ok? Or do many think the diesel is better?

Any pearls of wisdom will be appreciated.

Thanks, Anne

You will have those who will swear by both. Diesels will get better mileage and the engines should last longer. (Although gas engines are much better than the "olden" days.) Prices are usually higher on the diesel. I could go back and forth with pluses and minuses and in my mind it's what YOU prefer. I prefer gas. But if my "perfect" rig next time I'm buying happens to be a diesel, I won't rule it out. I would not want a diesel rig that has a generator that runs on propane, however. And as long as I stay with little rigs, I like the inexpensive costs of servicing (my last oil change was at a Ford dealer for around $30, for example).

I drive a pickup (diesel) and pull a fifth wheel so my comment won't really help
several years ago we towed a 24 foot tt with a gas vehicle got 8-9 miles per gal
we tow a 36 foot 5th wheel with diesel and get around 9-11 depending upon terrain ect
that said remember when you have diesel all is more the parts are more the labor is more and the
fuel is more why who knows but it is...but none the less I'll stay with diesel

We have owned one gas and three diesel motorhomes. Our gas motorhome was 32' and never gave us any problems (1999 Tiffin Allegro). Our next one was a 2007 Tiffin Phaeton 40' rear diesel (we went full-time). We had several mechanical problems. Diesels, as Beth said, are more costly at repair time. However, we did prefer the diesel for having lots of power for big hills and it was more quiet inside the coach since the engine was in the rear. We have also owned two other diesels - both with Mercedes Benz, 22' and 24'. We get 15-16 mpg. Yes, it will probably last a million miles but we won't be around to use all those miles. They also cost more than gas. However, I think they hold their value more than gas. There are a lot of things to consider - for instance, oil changes are less expensive on gas, but diesel goes more miles between oil changes. The new diesels require a DEF additive about once a year - not a big deal, DEF is now sold at Walmart.

If I were a solo part-time RVer, I would pick a small motorhome with a diesel because I liked the power. If I were a solo full-time RVer, I would go with 28-32' gas. Just my opinions. Good luck on your decision.

I have a 2007 35' diesel pusher (with 2 slides) and have taken it all over the Western mountains and it purrs like a kitten. Only part timer though but should travel more!!
Good luck with your search and travels.

I have a gasser and I really love it. I have only had a few instances where I wish I had a little more power that a diesel pusher might give me. I haven't tried any mountain roads yet, though.

We've had two gas RV s; one class c and now a class a. We just wave at those diesels that pass by us on the steeper roads  I do like the fact that the doors r up front and there is a better turn radius on the diesels, but we've been very happy with our gas. carold. Whoops, I better edit that "gas" comment before Mitch sees it :o
