We have owned one gas and three diesel motorhomes. Our gas motorhome was 32' and never gave us any problems (1999 Tiffin Allegro). Our next one was a 2007 Tiffin Phaeton 40' rear diesel (we went full-time). We had several mechanical problems. Diesels, as Beth said, are more costly at repair time. However, we did prefer the diesel for having lots of power for big hills and it was more quiet inside the coach since the engine was in the rear. We have also owned two other diesels - both with Mercedes Benz, 22' and 24'. We get 15-16 mpg. Yes, it will probably last a million miles but we won't be around to use all those miles. They also cost more than gas. However, I think they hold their value more than gas. There are a lot of things to consider - for instance, oil changes are less expensive on gas, but diesel goes more miles between oil changes. The new diesels require a DEF additive about once a year - not a big deal, DEF is now sold at Walmart.
If I were a solo part-time RVer, I would pick a small motorhome with a diesel because I liked the power. If I were a solo full-time RVer, I would go with 28-32' gas. Just my opinions. Good luck on your decision.
