Tina and Nan stayed in a campground in Custer and I think they were pleased. I believe they said it was this one: http://www.fcrvpk.org/ There are many private campgrounds in that area. Custer is close to Mt. Rushmore and other attractions in the Black Hills. It's going to be very hard to get into one of the state campgrounds over the 4th because reservations have to be made 90 days in advance....and many of them aren't really big rig friendly. If you stay in Custer go the Cowboy for a meal and ask for Sean for your waiter! ;) He's earning cash for his last semester of college!

I also know of a nice little one site campsite in the eastern part of the state. It's free, but only has a 30 amp hookup. ;) The hostess is just a sweetheart!

Pat, that is the place! The owner is a character. He takes Passport America. I don't think he likes it but he took it He also talked Nan and I in staying an extra day and encouraged us to rent a car to drive around and see the state park and the touristy sites. His friend has the car rental business and when you get the car they have "stickers" on the windows and passes so that you can get in to the parks free! Someone drove the car over that afternoon for us. It worked great since we were both without toads at the time on our way back from Alaska. We also made the run up to check out Sturgis.

And I can second the recommendation for that private campground over in the southeastern SD area. The hostess and the food was great! :)
