cleaning with pets

Postby CricketSail » Thu May 16, 2013 7:29 am

I have two schipperkes (Belgian barge dogs) and a cat. I wash the dogs once a week and brush them daily. I use a FURminator, which helps a lot. But oh my there is a lot of fur to be cleaned up in spite of trying to keep them clean and groomed. Around the house there is the vacuum and I do damp moping. But when I move to my full time living RV I want to seriously cut down on the work it takes to keep things clean. There will be less space, but I still want to keep it clean while skipping the vacuum, and forget using all the water in buckets. What solutions for keeping it clean in the RV with pets do you find most helpful?

I traveled with two Labs who shed CONSTANTLY. I had the carpet removed so all I had to do was sweep and/or damp mop. Also had dustbuster vacuum.

Very happy looking pretty dogs. When I need to do more than vacuum, I fill a spray bottle with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water. Just spray the floor or what ever needs cleaning and wipe with a cloth or microfiber mop. I clean every thing with vinegar and water as it also disinfects. I don't buy cleaning products but use white vinegar, baking soda and sometimes use peroxide. Cleaning with these products all all the rage on Pinterest but I've used them for years.

Love Paulette's answer.

I have carpet ... need to brush it as the hair really sticks in it. If I was without carpet, would have area rugs that could be shook outside. Still would need to vacuum them, most likely, though ... as I even have an area rug on my linoleum in here. Much as I like the no carpet idea ... I don't like cold feet.

Oh, and do all your brushing outside. And maybe brush more often than you are now. I have fur remover things that I use every morning on Peaches pillow and the common areas she sleeps. That helps a lot.

I, too, don't like cold feet, so I have three shakeable-outable scatter rugs. I also have a rechargeable Swivel Sweeper which picks up an amazing amount of dirt and dog hair (and my hair) as well as crumbs and whatever. It's like an old fashioned carpet sweeper with a battery powered motor. Cleaning its brushes is not fun, but it's so worth it!

I use throw rugs that can easily fit in the washer or shaken outside, and also I have an old flannel sheet I use on my
recliner. (Got rid of my sofa)

I'm toying with getting a new vacuum cleaner and was looking at some at ACE'S and this lady told me she uses
a Shark that they are really good she it seems to me cleans houses but also has a pet and really liked them
I notice after I had Shadow groomed that he isn't leaving lots of hair on the carpet...LoL
I toy with getting rid of the carpet although think I too like warm feet but Shadow absolutely hates walking on the non carpeted areas
so guess he will win that one

How about throw rugs on the carpet? I have two down in mine, and I think they help hold a lot of dirt. I got them when I thought I was going to get the little dog that I didn't get. They're the colorful rag-type from Walmart. (I hate walking on bare floor, probably because I am definitely not inclined to wash my feet before getting in bed. ;))
