Ellen, the Senior pass, which is the one pictured, is available to anyone age 62 or older and does not require military service. It is good for a lifetime and costs $10 at a National Park. It gives you a 50% discount on nearly all camping, but you do need the senior person in the car with you.

Military people are eligible for a free Annual Pass, which is slightly different because it does not give you a 50% discount on camping or things like boat launching fees.

If you are eligible for a Senior Pass, that one would give you the most benefits.

Good news. Get out there and put it to good use.

I finally got around to getting my pass last summer. Have only been one place that honored it - a TVA campground. However they would only give me a 10% discount.

To clarify a little more: Senior pass (as explained above by Judy.) with RETIRED MILITARY ID at military CGs gets that over 62 yrs. up to 50% off, depending on the branch of service campground, i.e. Army does at some & the Navy, but not the AF...some do, some don't.

Active duty folks can get the free Annual Pass...has different discounts than the Sr. pass or the Disabled Pass. (which I have because I'm a 40% disabled vet.)

Senior Pass cost a 1 time fee of $10......Disabled Pass is free..you just have to have proof of disability to present.....both of these give the same benefits...

Hope this helps....

Oh thing to remember on those passes the senior one?? don't loan it out either I've questioned more than one person on the use of there card at the campground and my Mom let my brother in law who forgot his as I remember the story and who was obviously over 65 and hers came back stamped or something on the back not sure what it means but don't think she will ever loan it out again...its for your use and you need to be the one in the car don't have to be the driver but have to be in the car and have to be occupying that campsite..

Lots of good advice and well wishes on using my new pass. Thanks, ladies! And Lori and Judy, thanks for the clarifications about the separate military passes and their campgrounds.

I just got back from two more days in lovely Riverside State Park and I'll have 4 nights out there next week. I can do some work while I'm there, but I'm completely dependent on my Verizon hotspot to provide internet service so I can remote into my desktop PC at the office. That internet service has been poor the last two times I was there, so working was very difficult. Sounds like that would allow me to play, but the state senior pass is only good Sunday night through Thursday night in April, so I really need to convince my boss that I can work remotely.

When I retire, I'd like to continue with some kind of contract work that'll depend on the internet. Judy, I think I need a confab with you. :geek: It's not so much a TV issue of DirectTV vs Dish. My problem will be getting a good internet signal. But that's 15 months away. In the meantime it's hard to justify any kind of boosters for occasional 2- to 3-day getaways. sigh...

We went to the Catoctin Mountain visitors center yesterday afternoon so she could get her pass, FINALLY! Quick and painless. Very nice ranger gave mom some good tips:

#1 Never surrender or throw away your card if someone tells you it's expired. This is not true. Your card is good for your entire life. He said an elderly gentleman had come in once to replace his card because he was told at another park that his card was old and no longer valid. Sadly the gentleman tossed it out. The ranger said that though the man had an older card, it was not only valid but all of the benefits associated with that card would have still been honored, grandfathered in as it were.

#2 Mom was given a car hang tag with her number on it. She was told to hang it in her window should she arrived at a park after hours. The ranger/attendant would see it and know she's good to go. Though there is a spot to insert her card in the hang tag as well, don't. It would be too easy for someone to break in the car/RV and steal it. Simply show the card if asked.

Mom is so proud of that little thing!
