Points to Ponder

Postby retiredhappy » Tue Apr 02, 2013 9:38 am

Just got home yesterday from Arizona. Great trip - long, very windy drive going and just a little wind returning. I was pondering the following:

1. Why do I always have a side wind and never a tail wind?

2. Why is it the one time I want to use a reststop restroom (my tanks were empty) are they ALWAYS closed?

3. Why is you've driven for miles and miles with absolutely no one behind you and the minute you get near a town the road behind you is now full of cars? Where do they come from?

4. How come you keep passing the same BIG truck over and over?

Just asking.

I don't know what it is about Texas but I always have a cross wind.

The closed rest areas aggravate me too. I think Louisiana has closed just about all the rest areas on I-10 except the ones at the state line and the one at Butte LaRose. At least in Texas there are places to stop that don't have the restrooms. And don't plan on dumping your tanks because the dumps are closed more often than not.

I know your post doesn't require an answer, but I won't let that stop me. ;)

1. Perhaps you need to drive more north/south roads instead of east/west?
2. Can't comment on that one. :?:
3. Because most people only drive within 20 miles of their homes and cities mean jobs.
4. Murphy's law. It's like highway leap-frog.

That's like, why do I always ride my bike only uphill? Somehow the hills reverse themselves returning home. Ditto for the wind.

And yes, I have seen that truck so many times. There must be a whole fleet of lookalikes that keep getting ahead of us.

Oh, I have learned to always carry a bleach bottle full of water for when I am low on water or my water pump is having trouble priming itself when I drive. Has come in very handy for flushing and handwashing at rest stops when I don't want to go in.

I agree there are some strange occurrences while on the open road...I think I might be able to explain the back and forth with the big trucks. Many, probably most of the larger lines have them governed to a max speed. They are always running with cruise on so their speeds are more consistent. I use cruise but I still fluctuate more than the trucks as most of us do. You will accelerate at times and pass them then when you reduce your speed they pass you so on a long freeway drive this can go on and on. My husband stressed to me the importance of driving close to the speed limit (I prefer to drive under it) because I am asking for one of them to drive into me especially if sleep deprived which most of them are.

Large sections of HWY 10 are 80 mph. Am I the only one who thinks 80 mph is CRAZY????? I'm comfortable between 55 and 65 depending on the road and that's the speed I'm gonna do so all those people in a big hurry will just have to live with going around me. Actually I'm thinking of having a sign on my spare tire cover that says: "pass or get off my ass" or maybe " Caution, cranky old lady driving". I hate being tailgated and it just causes me to slow down until they go around.

I like the second one, "Caution, cranky old lady driving." Let me know if you find the appropriate bumper sticker. :)

I was thinking of getting a couple of stickers that said something like, "I have bigger bumpers than you do, and they are made out of heavy gauge steel."

Would you believe that as I was stopped to make a right turn upon leaving a gas station the other day, some idiot in a small car came out of nowhere, cut in front of me, and proceeded to turn right in front of me, leaving me with my jaw hanging open? I was only about 10' from traffic with my signal on.

Yup! Ya need more north/south trips, Karen! Funnily - Flitter sails through a cross wind like a sailboat. But a headwind? Now that's a totally different story with that overhead bunk!

Bumper stickers: I like "Because I'm bigger than you". I also like the one a tour bus driver muttered when a taxi tried to squeeze into his lane - "Guess who's gonna win this match?"

We should start a bumper sticker company for LOL's (little old ladies).

Karen, when I heard about the 80 MPH speed limit I said Texas must be trying to thin the herd. ;) I like to drive in Texas most of the time because they have so much better roads than Louisiana. What I don't like is the 70 MPH speed limit on a 2 lane road with no shoulder that should be 55 MPH. I also don't like the practice of driving on the shoulder to let traffic pass. That's against the law in Louisiana. I will pull over if I get a chance but not going 65. The cowboys in the big trucks that ride my bumper make me a crabby old lady. I feel the wind in my van and small motorhome more than someone with a heavier rig. The idiots I would like to run over are the ones that almost kill them selves trying to pass me and don't go a mile before they stop and turn.
