trying not to rant

Postby grammynmaggie » Wed Mar 06, 2013 4:49 pm

Ok...I have been very discouraged …..frustrated today...I want to vent about it
but know that is not a good thing...not good to dwell on the negative ...so what
I will do...is ask about decorating your RV...I tried the double sticking tape...could
not get it to stick to the wall...sometimes not even the object....it seems that every
thing I like does not fit...i like mostly a country rustic look with a little lace thrown in
...i have some very small wood crates trying to work them in...nothing is working...how
do you do it...when you travel do you take all the decorative stuff down and stow it
and then put it back up again? sound like that would be it...but I want to enjoy it on my
day trips as I cant travel now...that is one of the disscouraging and frstrating things I
am trying to work on ..only taking day trips....I know this is a ramble but thats about how I feel...

Donna, since I wasn't in your unit when we met at the FL GTG, I'm not sure what you're trying to do. I use lot of the plastic hooks with the double sided sticky tape for things, but most of them (the pictures & decorations) don't even come down when we're underway. If I needed to undo everything I did in between trips, the work involved would be futile. Let us know exactly what you're trying to do so we can give you some advice.

What on my walls stays on my walls. I do recommend not getting cheap brands of the two sided sticky tape. Go with the good stuff. And give things the time said before putting weight on them.

I'm not much of a decorator. There were a couple of the stick up hooks in my motorhome and they have stayed up. About the only thing I hang on them is a calendar and fly swatter. I used some of the putty to stick a wire basket to the counter behind my stove top and it stays. I think it's called earthquake putty or something like that. I got it at Hobby Lobby. I don't know if that would keep a picture on the wall. I haven't had much luck with the double sided tape and I was trying to use the Gorilla duck tape on something and I couldn't even get it to stick. About all it wants to stick to is itself.

Walmart sells a putty product by Loctite that I have used to keep a vase in place. It should do the job for you.

I use industrial Velcro to hold up my big message, magnetized board. I have all the magnets that I have collected on it. I also use the Command hooks. My heavy terry cloth robe hangs on one of them.

We, too, use the industrial Velcro for picture hanging and the "peel and stick" hooks....I really don't have much on the walls and taking stuff ( only 4 things on the wall) down is part of my routine....the only thing that stays on the wall is the calendar which is on a small screw in the cabinet.....

I'm using the command hooks so they can be removed without leaving a mark or hole. Command also make Velcro strips for picture frames. The part you put on the wall will come off without a mark, but hold the picture frame snug to the wall (you put the Velcro strips all around the frame.). To hold things on the counter I use museum putty or a piece of non slide rubber stuff.

Coming from California originally, I use the blue "earthquake" putty that you can buy at Walmart. It comes in a hanging package in the office supply area near the two sided tape. It comes off clean and doesn't leave any residue. I traveled with several of my expensive Indian pottery vases on a shelf secured with a ring of the putty on the bottom. Never had a problem at all. I've tried the Command strips and had them come off the wall. Put a small (tip of your little finger) glob on the back of your picture frames and press against the wall - keeps them from "swinging". Also put a ring of it around a plastic container that I kept all my kitchen utensils in and drove down the road with it completely secure.

My son, who lives in earthquake prone northern California, uses this stuff to keep stuff on shelves from falling off during an earthquake. They have those narrow shelves and have put some glass things on them. http://www.amazon.com/Quakehold-33111-Museum-Gel-Clear/dp/B0002V37XY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=211XIET60JTKK&coliid=I2T9TACG3XJ4EE

I borrowed some from him to stick my desk clock on the formica in the corner of my kitchen counter. I also used some to glue down my alarm clock on the little shelf near my bed. Both items have been solidly in place for 8 months on the road. The nice thing about it is that it is clear. You remove it by sticking a knife or something similar under it and scraping it off. It only works on horizontal, flat surfaces, however. A lot of people out there use it under china and crystal in china cabinets.

I have had the same problem because the textured wall covering does not always hold the peel and stick hooks. I had two very light-weight frames with photos in them, and I used the very small pins, reinforced with the industrial velcro at the bottom. So far they have stayed up in heat and cold.

when we picked out our 5th wheel it was because of the wall space that I could hang stuff that I didn't want to get rid of
so I have pictures paintings and photos ...it got to the point though that I shuddered when DH came out with the drill and bit  but they don't move!!! stuff sitting on the surfaces IE table tops desk tops or counters have that no slide shelf liner on or they get binned up or stuck somewhere..the stuff that is on the shelf liner doesn't move have some stuff on the dresser that is new to the equation going to have to try the putty stuff but have one figurine that I worry that it will shake to pieces so will still put on bed cuddled up with pillows and towels

I had great plans to hang a barometer that was given to me by an aunt and uncle that they had had for years. I also wanted to hang some photos in my bedroom and put up a coat rack near the door. Unfortunately, I have done none of this because I am afraid of stuff falling. The stuff I have hung is strategically places over a bed or couch or some other soft place in case it falls.

I will tell you that a lot depends on how mcuh on the go you plan to be. If you have a toad and place to stay in one place for long periods of time, you can spread out more. I like to move campgrounds every week because i am in a travel mode, and I also have no toad, so I have to use my RV as a vehicle to get places. Hooking and unhooking water and electric, and even sewer is not so bad, but I will say stowing things like the TVs and stuff on counters and making sure drawers and cabinets are all closed is what takes the time!

So I have tried to keep things minimalized, and put stuff away in cabinets all the time. Just one of the compromises I have made. If you don't mind stuffing and reorganizing every time you move, that's fine too.

FYI, I did bring along some remembrances like my mother's music box and some small family things, but mostly they stay in drawers and I take them out and look at them once in a while.

In a previous rig I had doodads of some sort on every counter and shelf, even a ceramic tray with 3 little pots of silk plants. Everything was held in place with what we Californians call "earthquake clay". Some call it museum clay. I don't recommend the wax type one because it tends to melt and make a mess. We traveled all over the country and never broke a thing.

I have two friends who decorate country or shabby-chic style and they use the fancy lace cafe curtains or valances on a tension rod across the front of their windshields or other windows. They are just high enough to prevent seeing in during the day because someone standing on the ground looking up wouldn't see straight in anyway. Just an idea - doesn't work at night, of course, if lights are on. One of them has a 5th wheel with a rear kitchen window. I must say it looks darling and when she's standing at the sink she can see out over the curtain. Both of them have a lot of wall decorations (Command hooks) and knick-knacks (clay). Go for it.
