Coconut Oil?

Anyone here use coconut oil for health and/or beauty?

Its supposed incredible benefits are all over the internet. I had bought some for George when I heard it MIGHT help with Alzheimer's, but he didn't live long enough for me to see if any difference was forthcoming.

After he died, the container brought up bad memories, so I tossed it in the trash. (SHUT UP, Vickie!) (Vickie says whenever she needs to search for stuff I've written here, she searches the word "TRASH"...she's sarcastic that way, and you know me - I HATE sarcasm. )

I'm looking into again for mainly its health benefits.

Yup, been using it for about a year now. Don't know if its helped any health issues, but I'm hoping. Has anyone tried Red Palm oil? It's suppose to be another wonder nutrient.

I had never heard of red palm oil, so of course, I googled it. Here's an excerpt from the first article I read...

In a recent announcement, Rainforest Action Network and Orangutan Outreach have set up an online petition urging Oz to retract his support of red palm oil. According to RAN and Orangutan Outreach, the cultivation of red palm oil is destroying jungles in Borneo and Sumatra. According to the two groups, 90 percent of palm oil originates in Indonesia and Malaysia. The increased demand for this product has led to massive forest clearings, putting ecosystems and wildlife in danger.

In order to meet the demand, RAN and Orangutan Outreach say palm farmers have had to go even further into the jungle and killing off orangutan in the process. According to the press release, “The forests of Borneo and Sumatra are the only place where these gentle, intelligent creatures live, and the cultivation of palm oil has directly led to the brutal deaths of thousands of individuals as the industry has expanded into previously undisturbed areas of rain forest.”

The groups continue, “When the forest is cleared in order to make room for oil palm plantations, every living creature is captured or killed. Adult orangutans are shot on sight.” The groups argue that the Oz endorsement and the increasing popularity of red palm oil could lead to the extinction of orangutans due to the destruction of their habitat in order to find a diet miracle.

Oh how arrogant we people are. No red palm oil for me, that's for sure.

Holy Crap, this Google search was eye opening, too (palm oil cultivation harming rain forests?)

https://www.google.com/search?q=palm+oil+cultivation+harming+rain+forests%3F&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

I need to stop buying any product I see that has palm oil in it...
Now I'll have to research if coconut palm oil is included in this.

From what I've just read, PALM OIL and COCONUT OIL are not the same.

My boss at one of my jobs had something against coconut oil. That was about 15 years ago and she was a very unpleasant person anyway. She always had something to say about what we would be eating like microwave popcorn. I don't remember now why she was down on coconut oil.

I pretty much ignore the news reports about the things that are going to kill you. The things they are down on one year are good for you in a few years.

Some of the seniors at the community center I go to use it. Mostly for skin or joint use although one guy actually ingests it every day and swears by it. Personally it's more fat that I would not want added to my diet.

I use coconut oil for most of my cooking unless olive oil is called for. Don't know about health benefits, but I like the flavor.
