Facebook email

Postby retiredhappy » Tue Mar 05, 2013 10:25 am

I had heard something about Facebook quietly giving anyone on FB an email address that anyone can access. Well yesterday I got my first FB email sales pitch from some company. Am thinking about deleting FB completely as soon as I figure out how to do so. I'm not happy about getting MORE spam and I think it was really sneaky to do something like this without any notification. Does anyone else know anything about this? Come on Mitch, do some research and also tell me how to delete my FB account if I decide to do that.

How did you know the email came from FB? I know that they say to "like" only the 1st generation posts from your friends as companies/hackers attach tracking or trojan bugs so when you open them your computer is quietly attacked. I do not click on any videos forwarded on FB. If you have been watching the news, this month all financial computers are to be hacked and banks are pretty much hopeless to stop it. These hackers are out of China and are very bold in their intentions. Scary, huh?

I agree with Lenora about 'Like' 1st generation posts only. Not so sure about all the 'shares' of various jokes, sayings, posts, YouTube, etc. I would think that could be an issue as well. Besides, I miss posts I want to read tucked into all this other stuff.

I agree that when you start reading posts tucked into a friend's post that offer a video etc it's tempting to 'click''. But I try to remember I don't know how safe that person is about what they click on and post.

I have almost no information posted on Facebook other than my name and the high school I went to. I also never Like any ads or games, and have security set tightly.

There is a security setting under the little padlock in the upper right corner. If you click on it, it will give you options on who can contact you. Not sure this will turn off everything, but I have mine set to Strict Filtering.

Another thing I did a long time ago, was set up a separate email account with my provider for junk mail. I use that email for Facebook, and any time I buy anything online or sign up for stuff. That way, if there is something important, I check it once a week and forward it to my real email account. Not having to look at this garbage really helps, even if it is there.

So, here's something else about FB. Was checking out a rental on Madeira island and was forwarded to TripAdvisor and up pops pictures of "friends" who have used TA  they're everywhere! carold

Yep, they're everywhere. Went to buy concert tickets for the Houston Rodeo. You run your mouse over the seating chart and up pops FB members and shows where they are sitting :x Privacy, as our generation knows it, no longer exists if you use social media.

This all confirms my decision to NOT get involved with FB, Twitter or anything like them.

I quit Facebook quite a while ago. Never used Twitter and never will.

FB has been good for me, reuniting me with people from grammar and high school that I probably never would have seen again otherwise. So I love it for that purpose.
