Prehistoric creatures in Borrego Springs, CA

Postby oregontocal » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:20 am

Lou drove up to the Tower yesterday morning and we spent a wonderful day out in the desert. He needed to meet someone from the astronomy club around noon in Borrego Springs, so we made that our first destination, with a stop along the way to check on Charles out at Mountain Palm Springs. I hadn't been to Borrego Springs in over a year and hadn't read this article online, http://tinyurl.com/6c8amm, so seeing these creatures out in the middle of the desert was a fun surprise. We saw many more in the same area on both sides of the road; lots of birds and other assorted creatures. If you're ever in the area, this is well worth the trip. They're in the desert on Borrego Springs Road in an area called Galleta Meadows, which I first thought was another housing development.

Enjoy.

I love the places that aren't planned, that are total surprises. Nope, these creatures were pretty much stuck in one place: I know, because I walked right up to one of the mammoths and tapped on its leg. It didn't move. Someday I'll tell you about the time I did that in a wax museum. :D

Uh-Oh! At the Wax Museum just WHERE did you tap? I used to enjoy humiliating my kids by going up to mannequins and asking for directions.

Well, you see there was this Keystone Kop standing perfectly still, and I was about 15 at the time and wanted to freak out my younger brothers. So, I made some comment like, "Gee, this guy really looks real!" and kinda poked him in the stomach. When that stomach moved and he laughed, I just about fainted right on the spot. My brothers just laughed their stupid heads off.

I'm glad you were just 15, nowadays heaven knows what you'd poke! When I went to Madame Tussuad's in London they had uniformed men to guide you and answer questions. They also had a couple of wax ones. Led to a lot of embarrassment.

It's a good thing we never took the kids to the museum--I'm sure I would have completely embarrassed them.
