From Key West to The Everglades

Postby BirdbyBird » Fri Feb 22, 2013 9:05 pm

I am sitting in the campground north of Ocala with Steve and Irmi and hear that Sarah is expected tomorrow. Cell service and current events on TV, I am back in civilization. There is a little catch up with the photographs and narrative.....

Nice to see your blog update, Tina! I haven't been to the keys in years and years now, and never remember that fort which is probably the most sturdy piece of construction I have ever seen.

Somewhere in the Everglades, way back when, there was a campground for tenters (can't remember if there were any RVs there) which was called something springs which had a small pond of crystal clear water that was heated by the earth. I stayed there for at least a week while a friend of mine was visiting her parents in Homestead. I had two dogs, a tent, a screen room, and little else. I remember it as being such a peaceful place and a well-deserved rest from whatever travails I had in my life back then. When I am finished with this post, I will try to find that place on the net again.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us again!

That fort's interior looks alot like Ft. Pulaski near Savannah doesn't it, Tina....Isn't it the fort that they sent Dr. Mudd to after his trial for being unlucky for fixing Booth's leg after he shot Lincoln??? Now that was worth the drive to the Keys to see.... ;) So interesting.... :) I love that we are getting the whole adventure thru yours and Liz's eyes...can't wait for the next installment.... ;) Thanks!!!!!

Tina, I really enjoyed your post about the Keys and now the Everglades. When (not if), we make it back to Florida, there is so much more to explore here. Thanks for taking us with you.

Lori, I thought the same think when I took the interior shot of those arches.....

I think the good dr mudd was sent to the fort at The Dry Tortugas which sit about 70 miles from Key West. There is a neat book by Navada Barr.....with that setting and a plot that ties back into that history......
