Insurance on household contents

When you have the contents of your home insured, and God forbid have to file a claim, do you have to show proof of what you are claiming..i.e. pictures; sales receipts?

The more pictures you have, the better your chance with a large claim. That said, when I was involved in a claim (break-in - stole lots of things) the insurance company we had accepted our word and the police report. But always, it's good to have documentation. And if you have lots of jewelry, or expensive artwork, etc - an appraisal and pics are pretty standard to be required.

Insurance companies have a pretty good idea of replacement value of normal stuff like TVs, etc. What always causes problems are the intangibles such as antiques, jewelry, artwork, collections, etc. Get appraisals whenever you can and lots of pictures. Keep all your claim stuff either in a fireproof box or somewhere other than your home.
