What to do in San Antonio?

Hi! We will be heading to the San Antonio/New Braunfels area in another month or so. If you have been to that area, can you pass on some things we shouldn't miss? Free and pay works. Thanks. Joanne

So much to do in that area ... but two I wouldn't miss are going to the Riverwalk (and take the cruise) and going to Fredericksburg. I'm sure lots more will be mentioned. Lots there worth doing.

Right now the Riverwalk has many areas under construction. It was on the news last week.

There is Seaworld, Fiesta Texas and the Alamo. There is the Hemisphere tower. North of San Antonio towards New Braunfels is Wonder Cave. New Braunfels/Gruene are interesting places to go and in another month - it might be warm enough for Schlitterbahn or tubing one of the rivers, although the Guadalupe is always cold. The water comes from the bottom of Canyon Dam. In Spring Branch is the Serengetti Resort where they have exotic animals.

Those are the things I can think of right off.

In addition to the Alamo, there are several other missions in San Antonio - I think it's 5 in total on the tour.

Maggie, aren't the Natural Bridge Caverns just north of San Antonio too? Chuck and I spent a weekend in San Antonio and went to those caverns. I don't remember for sure that that was the name. We went to Sea World that weekend too. Enjoyed both.

You're right, Dawn - it's Natural Bridge Caverns. I'm thinking of Wonder Cave - that's actually somewhere else and I can't remember where.

Wonder cave is in San Marcos about 25 miles up the road on I 35 just past New Braunfels. I went to college there and loved out @ Wimberley,,, out RR 12 towards Blanco and then F'burg. Don't skip Wimberley as it's a delightful place to visit and the Cypress Creek and Blanco River are lovely. I know there are several RV parks but the state park place to camp would be either Canyon Lake or on up to Blanco SP,, a lovely place where the camping is much more inexpensive. Just look at the map and plot your course.

In San ANtonio (my birthplace and residence til i was 9) is lovely but very very congested w/ traffic...so unless you have a tow car to run around in,, it's not the best place to maneuver a big rig. (not sure what you have but since this IS my stomping ground, i figured i'd put in my 2 cents worth.)

As someone said,, the Alamo (which is right in the middle of the downtown area) , there are other missions,,, san jose , conception, and the others which are very small... and not hardly worth the trip,, as they are spread all over town,,but the Alamo is the most interesting and time consuming... much more to see thats historically worth while. I never get tired of visiting it. As a matter of fact,, we plan to go the last weekend of the month or maybe next to last i forget,, when Wm. Barrett Travis's letter for help and reinforcements written to Sam Houston is coming for a visit to be on display for a week or so due to the anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo ,, i think it's the 125th,, sorry i forget , but you can find tht on the net,, just google alamo anniversary and it will probably give you the info...anyway,,, im rattling....

Just reread your post where it said you're not coming til april.. sorry for all my rattling. I forgot about La Villita,, which is down in the area of the Alamo... w/ the old spanish governor's mansion and some old buildings... in the same vicinity as the hemisfair tower etc.....
