First things first...lunch in Micanopy: Irmi, Liz, Carolb
Got the eating over with, then toured the town on foot. Here's Carolb and Irmi in front of the Herlong Mansion, built in 1875.
From there we drove to Cross Creek and walked around the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings home.
The house is only open for tours Thursday-Sundays, so we had to make do with looking in windows.
On the way back to McIntosh we stopped at the Evinston Post Office....oldest still operating PO in Florida. It was built in 1888.
A peek inside:
This is the owner whose father owned the general store before him. He enjoys telling stories about the history.
Stories like the one about the guy who had a shotgun mailed to him, and when he opened it, not knowing it was loaded, he discharged it into the ceiling. He also told about how the old oil lamps almost caught the ceiling on fire.
Vegetables sold here are grown in the garden in back of the store.
Back in McIntosh, we took the dogs on a walking tour, but I forgot to take pictures of that. Had a fun day and it was great to meet another forum sister.
