Winter Camping

Postby Joan » Fri Jan 04, 2013 10:30 pm

Since I store my camper, at least once during the winter, I have to bring it home to charge the battery. The weather forecast said that the weekend was going to be sunny, highs in the mid 40s and lows down to mid 30s, so I decided to give 'winter' camping a try. There is a state park with electrical hookups about 45 minutes from my home.

Now let me say something about Oregon weather, it is what it is when it is. I know this.

I arrived on Saturday. It was overcast and chilly. Not to worry. I set up my campsite:

And Bailey and I settled in for a nice cozy afternoon listening to music and reading. Note the cube heater on the shelf:

The next morning I made myself eggs, bacon and toast in 30 degree weather. I know this sounds strange but it was delicious. Here comes the sun:

I spent the day sitting in my zero gravity chair in my sleeping bag reading my book in the sun or taking walks with Bailey.

The next day, I had to go back into town for a doctor appointment. I awoke to frost which was ok. When I returned, there was 1 1/2 inches of snow on the ground with more falling. I wish I had taken the picture before I cleared the snow of off the shelter:

Picture from inside the camper as the snow fell:

Now, I am originally from WI, so driving in the snow does not bother me. On the other hand, I have never towed in the snow. I was also a little disconcerted when everyone else (yes, there are other crazy people in the world) began to bug out. I looked at the forecast (yes, I know) for the next day and decided that it would get warm enough with the sun shinning by the time I left that the roads should be clear. And that is what happened:

I have to say that I had a great weekend. I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Hanging out in Oregon.

Looks like it was a great camping spot. Quiet and peaceful...And I like how you described the weather here. So accurate!

I'm not quite as adventurous as you. I'll wait for spring... 8-)

I think I'm jealous! I would love a weekend like that with snow and then clear roads when I wanted to move on.

Joan - I just spent 2 weeks camping where the weather wasn't exactly as forecasted and planned. And my trailer is a little larger than yours!!! We were lucky as well when it came time to drive. And the snow at the Grand Canyon was so beautiful!

Which just goes to show we can be content, whatever "state" we're in. Nice pictures.

Joan, I LOVE your little camper and the setup you have! It looks like something right up my alley! Coziness inside, beautiful pristine whiteness outside, and close to home so not too far to drive! I would have loved to share that experience with you! Thanks for the great pics! And Bailey looks happy as a lark in his cozy little "nest!"

Wish I were going to meet you at the FL GTG, but I guess not this year, eh? However, I will look forward to meeting you sometime and inspecting your terrific-looking camping setup!

Loved the before and after snow pictures. Sure looked cozy in your rig, though. What a fun adventure to add to your travel stories.

Our first year in Alaska we were in Denali Park in Sept. camping in our class B. Well, I guess it was more of a -B rig as it had no pottie, water that you handpumped into a sink about the size of a shoebox, tiny fridge that barely held a gal of milk. But it did have a propane furnace! It was a beautiful fall-like day driving in, but woke up to a blizzard! Was not a fun drive back out, but made for a trip I have never forgotten. ;) :o

Thanks for sharing!

OH Joan that looks like so much fun. So glad you posted such great pics. I loved watching you do your set up last fall. Every time I looked over you had another room up and working. You have it dialed in for sure gal.

Bailey looks very content. Hope we can do some camping together again this summer. We need to make some plans later this spring.
